Eldest by Christopher Paolini

Posted in Reviews by Elliott Back on August 28th, 2005.

Set in a mythical land Alagaesia, much in theory like Tolkien’s “middle” earth, Eldest (Inheritance, Book 2) continues the saga that Eragon (Inheritance, Book 1) created. In many ways, it’s more satisfying than the new Potter book, because we see actual development of the attributes of the main character as he is trained by the elves. Eldest also introduces a new subplot where his “brother” from home rallies the villagers to move out of the empire into rebel lands. There again, the great war begins, and a new rider is introduced right before the book ends.

There’s even a romance substory between Eragon and the elf he saved before, which amounts to nothing but frustration. Probably Paolini is saving total release until his last book in the trilogy. And while this romantic tension is irritating, everytime Arya refuses his advances when you expect her to finally give in keeps you hooked nicely along.

Read if you liked the first one, or want a quick throw-away fantasy with more plot movement than fresh ideas.

I just finished reading “Eldest” and enjoyed the development of an enlightened spiritual state in the characters. The idea of using the living beings in the environment as a source of power to enable change, (i.e. a logic based magic system), the presentation of a situation where the bad beings have a more efficient form of magic because of 100 years more practice than the good beings, & then using this to produce a cliff-hanger, causes me to speculate about how this occurred and about how the contest will be won.

The facts as presented concerning magic:
With the proper awareness, life-force can be used to change creation
The complexity and speed of the change determine the amount of life force needed; i.e. increasing complexity and speed use proportionally more life-force
Language has been used to structure the life-force changes and thereby make controlling them easier
Song is used to make complex changes easier and faster
Life-force can be acquired from living beings other than oneself, the extraction of which may require replenishment if the life form is to survive

Facts that will be presented concerning magic:
Karma exists, all that you be, (think, say, do etc.) comes back to you
o Bad beings devise ways to delay their Karma or get someone else to carry the burden for them, (i.e. selling one’s soul causes you to be a stand in for the evil one’s Karma)
o Good beings devise ways to speed up their Karmic return. The ultimate goal is to have your Karmic return become instant and immediate, (the end result of having instant Karma = whatever an evil one does to you happens to them instantly and immediately / it cannot go anywhere else or be taken by any other being)
This knowledge of Karma causes good beings to adopt a well known Mahayana Buddhist principle as the foundation of their magic or spiritual practice
o From: “For a Brilliant Life” Shinjuku (Tokyo), Japan July, 1991
o No matter what the reason
o One must never kill another person
o One must never kill oneself
o The wisdom of Buddhist teachings begins and ends here
    o By: Daisaku Ikeda
To Continue To Be Forgiven Always Remember
    o Forgiving a living being,
    o oneself or others,
    o is a charitable act.
o Virtue is its own reward.
o Virtue is its own punishment.

Methods by which the bad beings could increase the speed and complexity, (i.e. efficiency), of their magic, (ability to change creation or create):
Change the dragon so that it becomes an energy storehouse, much the way a camel stores water
Use the life-force of the amassed armies to enact complex changes quickly, killing large numbers of the soldiers in the process
Use the energy of the souls of the dead to cause the changes, causing these non-corporeal beings extreme suffering, (since they are not mortal and cannot die); access to this type of energy source usually implies extreme evil, such as a “Deal with the Devil”

Methods by which the good beings could increase the speed and complexity, (i.e. efficiency), of their magic, (ability to change creation or create):
Use of the sun as a life-force source, the disadvantage of this is that it is exhaustible, i.e. a finite source
Use the central creative force in creation as a life-force source, the advantage of this source is that it is infinite. This source is better know as, The Incomprehensible Mystic Law of Cause and Effect, Allah, and/or God; depending upon your perspective. This is why good always wins over evil.

The end result of this is good beings who do no harm, defeat all evil (with the warning that, “The judgment you render is your own!”), heal the sick, raise the dead, walk on water, feed the multitudes, and gradually by example, teach all beings The Way.

Eragon was a fantastic book, Eldest was amazing, those that love, Garth Nix, William Nicholson and Phillip Pullman will be blown away by the young Christopher Paolini!

  3. Julia Barcia says:

I though both books were so good that I read them 45 times!

  4. fyrth says:

If there was one redeeming quality in Eragon or Eldest, it was the dragon Sapphira. But she was the only thing that was enjoyable.
Paolini, to be frank, is an ametuer writer and the fact that his novels were published is a classic example of when good chances happen to bad ideas. The stereotypes are massive, numerous, and impossible to ignore. Eragon is far from a likeable hero, instead he alternates between wonder-boy to whiny infant in the space of a few pages. The fact alone that he could have learned to swordfight well in a few weeks gives you an indication of how unrealistic he is. The names and places are pathetic. Paolini seems to think that because he created a language he should automatically win the praise of the public. In actuallity, it doesn’t take much to create a language, especially one that is as mediocre as his. Look, I”l do it right now.
    Egrtejebkje: dragon
    Hehjoiejoiejp: man
getebehb: the verb to be, conjugated into
    I am: getegehj
    she is/he is: getegbe
    it is: getetete
    they are: getretetetetetete
    we are: getetevf

And we have the first several words for my new language, which is as un-pronouceable as Paolini’s. Easy. The only thing that gave Tolkien’s language such life was that, in reality, Tolkien was a linguist which meant that he studied languages and had a grasp for grammatical structures. Paolini hasn’t done that. Like me, he just combines words with a few consistencies and calls them a language.
Previous critics have mentioned the Lord of the Rings and Mcaffery stereotypes. There are also references to Star Wars, Jordan, and Martin’s name Arya has been recycled by Paolini to serve as the name of a beautiful (of course) elf.
Eragon’s romance is pathetic. The charatcers’ depths are so shallow that they prevent any reader from immerging themselves in the book. Overall, it is just sickening that so many people can call this rubbish a passable story

    • ash says:

i totally agree. paolini is a pathetic excuse for a writer he has ripped off good ideas from other stories and transformed them into pathetic ****.
      and about the language,
plet, means paolini sucks in my language

    • blueyes says:

I can’t say that i agree completly with you, the thing i do agree with is that i really dont like eragons charecter, hes an unmodest boy who thinks he can do anything just because hes a dragon rider, theres no way that a 16 year old boy who had been studying sword fighing and magic for half a year would be as good as an elf, even a sick one, (see in 1st book,”Eragon”) He is defenitly an unrealistic character… I also found that Paolini “stole” many phrases and ideas from other famouse books, like “Star Wars” and “Harry Potter” and another book called
“Dragon Rider”. This makes it a “corny” book….
What I don’t agree with you on is the concept of the “ancient language” Paolini has written. You say that he has taken a jumble of letters and placed them together, which I think is untrue, take the term Waise Heill -Be Healed. Heill sounds remotely like “heal”. This is, however, not true for the Urgal language, where Paolini has taken a a few letters and mixed them together to make words, ushnark, for example, sounds nothing like “father”, but that’s how Paolini puts it; I have to debate againts myself though: All we have done for the English langauge is take a jumble of letters and string them together into words, same for French ad Italian, so why is it any different for Paolinis language?

  6. ;nmjxc;fhz says:

Fabulous books, both of them. I think fyrth is a complete ******* not to recognize the quality of the books. Anybody who doubts Eragon and Eldest should just try writing a book themselves and see how much better they are than Chris Paolini.
    anyway…….bye y’all

  7. mints says:

I think that they are both great books, but nobody could call them original. It is unrealistic that Eragon learns to swordfight etc etc in such a short time, but hey, suspend disbelief and it makes for an absorbing, great read.

  8. Diego241 says:

The books were great but too unreal. Eragon can go from super-strong to super-pathetic in the span of 3 pages. its dumb. the only character that lived up to my expectations was Saphira. it also dissapointed me that Eragon and Saphira have only fought together 1 time in both books!! its dumb. 50% satisfaction for Eldest, 90% for Eragon

  9. Kanon says:

I loved the first book Eragon. Im not even done with it completely, but I can already tell Im gunna like it no matter what happens, ^._^
Im getting the other book Eldest as soon as possible, and I might have to buy Eragon in hard cover because I took the book absolutley everywhere with me and it got kind of beat up. But no matter, ’cause Im getting both of the books in hard cover this time around.
I want to be an author myself really bad. I already started writing a story for fun and for my friends to read and review and Im up to chapter forty six. Its called Heart to Heart and I would love to get it published some day ^.^
Until then, Im going to keep reading your books, hoping to get a little closer to my dream!
    ~With love,

  11. Henry VII says:

well…. fyrth has a point about the language bits. I myself am bilingual, and notice the poor structures of Paolini’s languages. What fyrth and Paolini created can still be considered languages, except for the fact that fyrth only translated a few literary….parts into gibberish, using only geteeteteht and **** like that. Paolini actually derived his Elvish from norse, but made Urgal and Dwarfish up. I am an aspiring author/producer/writer and once made up a language to be used for a tribe of aliens. it was hideously complex, so i just quit there. As for Paolini’s languages to be unpronouncable, whats the difference between Tolkien’s? When i first read a word in the Ancient Language, I noticed a striking similarity to Tolkien’s pronounciations. There is a real language known as Latin, and when literally translated into English, it often is word for word, but just as often silly. Phrases could come out as things like “The cook of western the street jolly is.” When translated into other languages, such as French or Polish, more often than in English the grammar is correct word-for-word. So fyrth is wrong about much, but right about much, but seems angry at Paolini or just a bad critic. I have noticed a striking similarity in the events of Star Wars (Episodes 4,5,6) to Eragon-Eldest. Arya could be leia, Murtagh could be Han Solo in some parts, Coruscant could be Uru^Baen, Galbatorix may be a cross between the Death Star, Darth Vader, and the Emperor. The Empire is the Empire, the Varden the Rebel Alliance for their striving of the old ways, and their Alliance (many SW worlds, Surda and Varden). I could go on, but I need to get to other things….

    • ash says:

u idiot. tolkiens languages have beautiful sound, based on welsh. and while pailini made up two languages (more like a few words of giberish) his other language was based on, not norse because norse isn’t a language, but rather on scandenavian origin, and it sounds nothing like tolkiens beautiful language.

  13. Kratos says:

I’ve read both Eragon and Eldest, and I have to admit, they’re similar to Tolkien’s works. Think, though. These aspects are what MAKES a fantasy series. Would you like it any better if Paolini had taken one of these major ingredients out? Both Eldest and Eragon are good, through reads, and regardless of what others say (Fyrth the **** sucker, for example), you can see the amount of work and thought that went into these books, with good results. I’d like to see half of Paolini’s reviewers try to make such a dynamic book themselves. You’ll see it’s not as easy to criticise.

    • ash says:

      tolkien=awesome
paolini=stupid little boy with no friends and decided to take brilliant stories like star wars and transform them into his own crappy story

I love eldest and eragon! does anyone know yet what the third book will be called?

  19. James says:

The third book will be called Empire, Stephen. And the books were simply fantastic. If you liked these books, you’ll love the Dragonriders of Pern series. Go and read them.

    • blueyes says:

The 3rd book already came out! It’s called “brisinger” Paolini is curently writing a fourth, and they dont know when its gonna come out. Youev most likely already read Harry Potter but just in case, read those! Theres a good read…

  22. Elven says:

Eragon, was an entertaining and interesting story, eldest was a little weird by swapping back and fourth from roran and eragon all the time but i thouroughly enjoyed both books. The language is quite good even though others may not like it. I like certain parts of the language like: Brisingr and Jierieda. Overall its my fave book

  23. Christine says:

    • blueyes says:

THE THIRD BOOK ALREADY CAME OUT I’VE READ IT, IT’S CALLED BRISINGER AND PAOLINIS WORKING ON THE FOURTH BOOK, PAOLINI DOESN’T KNOW WHAT IT’S GOING TO BE CALLED AND ALL THE TITALS ANYBODYS READ ON THE INTERNET ARE FAKE!!!

  24. Christine says:

  25. Christine says:

fyrth ur da biggest *** ***** is da world!!! ur totally actin like a old man thts totally snobby seriously the books r gr8. how old r u anyhows 82? LOL

    • ash says:

fyrth is completely right about paolini being stupid. and you should learn to speak english.

  26. Khadan says:

I have enjoyed the books, but it is clear that Chris P is a young man who has read the major science fantasy of the 1970’s onward. That is not a bad thing, and that he uses those worlds to create his world conveys his appreciation for those authors. My complaint on the series is that Chris has fallen into the plot trap so many authors do. That is setting up the hero against an enemy that in knowledge and skills far out classes the hero. I mean, Eragon has been with Saphira for well over a year and she is still not the size of a mature dragon, yet suddenly this dragon bigger and more mature than she appears who clearly is much younger than she is. At the end of Eldest, I am left wondering how the author will manage to find a way to allow Eragon and Saphira to be victorious without resorting to some lame sudden miracle as used by the lower tiers of authors. I really hope this can be avoided and the third book be as good as the first.

  27. justin says:

honestly that fyrth guy is an idiot
I have here quotes from an inspired reader… milan if you’r reading this…

“i mean “the language is just consancances” !!!!!!!! WTF”
“AND “you cant imagin yourself in the strory” !!!!! WTF also”
“YAH RIGHT, I CAN IMAGIN MYSELF IN THE STORY VERY VERY WELL!!!!!!!!!!”
AND “he learned to sword fight in a few weeks”, yah right, he learned in what six monthes!!!!!!”

some people, unlike fyrth, have learned to discard the literal meanings and minute details and pay attention to the story as that is the real point of a story.

can someone give me fyrths adress?

    • ash says:

if u had read the book u would know that he bests brom in swordfighting in a few weeks. and fyrth is right

  28. justin says:

    email adress that is

  29. Super Cool Man In China says:

MAN THOSE BOOKS ARE GOOD!! I mean the idiot who said it was a bad book is just a ******, a big fat one too. All the people out there who like “Harry Potter” are STUPID, I swear to god. Harry Pothead is the bad book, SO CRITIC, you go mess with that book and not with the cool Eragon books!! Eragon has a bright future in front of them and not like Harry Pothead, who re-peat’s everything 20 times. This is how the book 4 is like, “Ohh, Harry don’t you remember the time in book 3 how we had some alcohol, well lets get some more!!!!! Lets have some POT, wants some POTTER??!?!?!?!?”

So in conclusion I say that Eragon is ALOT BETTER than Harry Pothead!!!

    • blueyes says:

okay, lets get one thing straight, Ive got nothing against the Eragon books, in fact, I love them, but that doesn’t keep me from thinking that there a corny load of nothing, and did you know that Paolini stole, like, a thousand phrases and ideas from Harry POTTER, and J.K Rawling made that entire world and story off the top of her head, whereas Paolini, just copies a bunch of stuff from other books, like the book “Dragon Rider” Wow, really origanal! And at least Harry Potter isn’t a corny load of nothing because some of her charecters actually die! They arn’t a living miracale!

  30. Carkenbraughman says:

First off, I just have to say this: All of you who think he is a bad writer for mixing up a bunch of different stories are complete retards who are just saying stuff like that because you are jealous and suck so much at writing yourselves that if you tried, and writing skill made you skinny, you would be so fat you would be selling shade in the summer time. Also, Fyrth is a F*cking ****** and wouldn’t know writer’s skill if it wiped it’s fat *ss in her face. Back to mixing up stories, most “good” authors, and even “really good” authors take every fantasy they’ve read and mix it all up to make up their own thing. However, Phenomenal writers make up a new world based on almost nothing – like Tolkien or even George Lucas. Also, on the subject of the Ancient Launguage (Paolini’s made-up launguage), for all you who say that it sucks because it is just gibberish, go listen to someone speak a launguage you don’t know: Chinese, Spanish and french all work good, but any will do. Unsurprisingly, it sounds like gibberish too! Huh! Now isn’t that weird? And it being all consinates, Polish has three vowels. THREE!!! Try learning that! All in all, Eragon pwnes all and any one who says otherwise is either A) a ****** who doesn’t know a good book from the c*ck in their *ss, or B) Are F*cking jealous as h*ll and don’t give a sh*t how good it is. My I.Q. is 156 AND I read more books than your mom sucks C*cks, so I know what a good book is. Eragon and especially Eldest are good books and F*ck any who say otherwise.

P.S. Sorry to those who agree for having to even look at this, and also sorry to all who don’t like bad launguage, it’s just hard to express anger any other way without using collage level vocabulary.

P.P.S. Fyrth sucks c*ck for a living while f*cking her self in the *ss at the same time.

  31. Yo. says:

Yo mints, when you say that eragon is unoriginal, you’re wrong, plain and simple. Why? Because for a story to be original, it must be different from every other story in some way. Can you find a story that is EXACTLY the same as Eragon/Eldest? Just because it is a mix of different stories doesn’t mean it’s unoriginal. If you take Eldest, and change Eragon’s name to Sajin, it will be an original story. No one will buy it, but it’s original.

  32. Carkenbraughman says:

One more thing to all you motherf*ckers out there. You had better be insulting Eoin Colfer as well, because he said, himself, that he gets his stories by “taking everything I know, putting it in a blender and writing what comes out, hoping that it’s original.”

(once again) P.S. Fyrth sucks c*ck for a living while f*cking her self in the *ss at the same time.

  33. blue says:

I had the entire plotline in my head be the time Eragon gets his fortune read by the ***** witch. Toss in annoying lectures on how we should all be good little liberals and I was only finishing the books on sheer will. I can write at least as well as him and if he can get that **** published, who can’t get their pathetic little tales told?

  34. blue says:

I’ve read both by the way. And did I mention that Paolini sucks? Good.

  35. katelen says:

To all of you IDIOTS that think that Eragon And Eldest stink, well, get your self stuffed.
Oh,and, before I leave this horrible place,THANKYOU SO MUCH JAMES! I have been wondering what the third book is!

  36. katelen says:

Hey Blue! What the heck is you stinking problem? I don’t think that Paloni stinks and I don’t mean to make you mad but I, In my super personel, thinks that deep down you are jelus of Panolini.

    sorry.

  37. May says:

A person who says Paolini sucks is either very shallow, ignorant, or just way too critical. Besides, why did you read it if you were only going to say it sucked? Read genres you like, not everything that various people pick up! I hope none of you call me a stuffed shirt, but then people have different opinions on how a proper fantasy should be written. Maybe that’s Blue’s issue. If it can be called an issue. Also, a story is only a bunch of **** if its beginning isn’t solid enough to last for a lifetime(even though it has to end sometime). Then its only a bunch of words. CP took careful time piecing out his story; and a truly meaningful story is something that comes out of the author’s soul. If it doesn’t have that, then, it is trash. Sorry, i’ll go now. See you.

    • blueyes says:

I think all these people who are saying ” you suck cause you think he’s bad” or “you suck because you think hes good” are stupid, It’s just a mater of perspective. p.s. i’m “blueyes” not “blue”

  38. Frank says:

hey i think that both books were excellent and cant wait till the third book comes out. And that fryth person why dont you shut the **** up. I’d like to see you write two books as long and well put together as trese were. Earagon and Eldest were two books that i really enjoyed and got sucked into, and for the first time really WANTED to read, because of the excitment and suspense that was built up throughout the story.

  39. Frank says:

also if all you guys think that his books suck so much why the **** are you still buying the sequals. If hes such a horrible writer , in your opinion, what the hell are you doing spending money on a book you allready think sucks. You gotta be pretty ****** stupid to do that.

  40. Christa says:

Okay, look, people. I assume most of you are children.

You can call people “idiots” all you like for disliking this book, but they could easily call you idiots for liking it. Nobody is stupid because of their tastes. Don’t act so immature.

I find Eragon to be pretty unoriginal. Most of it is ripped right out of Lord of the Rings.

Before you say “WELL U TRY RIHTING A BOOK URSELF!!!”…… I am a writer. I have written many novels.

    • blueyes says:

I completly and totally agree, its all a mater of perspective, thank you for conferming…

  41. Christa says:

By the way, I can’t help but cringe at your total destruction of the English language. All those cuss words just make you look like children trying to act like “grown-ups”. If you’re not a child, then get a better grasp of the English language and stop acting so ridiculous.

  42. ernie says:

To all of the authors and writers out thr…i dun rly think u should be critisising christopher paolini’s work. I myself hav read a good number of books out thr by many authors..and so far i think christopher paolini’s books r the best. No offense or anything but i think tht christopher paolini is a much better author compared to all of the others in the world. at the age of 15…he can already write such good books….and all of u out thr r like mid 30s or something….even at such a young age…he is stilll the best…so u authors shouldnt be jeolous….a thousand thumbs upfor chris paolini…although i only hav 2

  43. your mom says:

i just read eldest and i loved it even though the plot is very slow and doesn’t speed up until the middle of the book.this and the first book, eragon are the best two books ever! i think i like it better than even harry potter, which i loved until i first read eragon. now i can’t wait until the third book comes out and when the movie is releaed i’m hella gonna see it!

  44. hi says:

both of these books were swweeet. i cant wait till empire comes out. by the way does anyone have any idea of when its coming out???? and wat do you all think about this movie ? i doubt itll be as good as the book. and willll it be animated or not ??

ALSO i agree with all of u about every1 u criticize cuz thereall biotchs

  45. Me says:

I don’t claim to be an expert of fantasy, or language, or dragons, or even literature, as some of the other entries I’ve read would have me believe they are, but I have read both books and am waiting with bated breath for the third.

To answer some of the hateful questions that this forum has harbored, I am just over thirty years old and am an aspiring writer. For me to think that I will be published is nothing more than a pipe dream and I have, in my time raising my story like one would a child, I have discovered that writing a story is one of the most difficult tasks I have ever undertaken and can only respect Paolini for not only succeeding in writing a book, but getting it published, making it a best-seller, and being honored with a movie adaptation.

There has been much criticism regarding the originality, (or lack thereof), of the Inheritance Trilogy, and to that, I submit this: fantasy may very well be the oldest genre written and I challenge anybody to come up with an idea that takes place in a fantasy setting that is totally original. J.K. Rowling came up with the most original fantasy series in decades and even she had to recycle characters, and creatures, and even magic.

To conclude my little rant, I say to my fellow Eragon lovers: like you, I cannot wait for the conclusion to what has been a very exciting series and hope for our sakes that it is half of what the other two have been. And to those who have nothing positive to say for the series: here’s a thought, save your money, and don’t buy the third installment of this series which, much to your dismay, is destined to be the quintessential classic fantasy series of our time.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I am just finishing Eragon after my first day of reading it! I don’t care what the other people say, I think so far the book is awesome. Who cares that it has links to the Lord of the Rings series, I agree with Kratos , ITS A FANTASY STORY PEOPLE! But i won’t push my oppions on you all but I will make an exception for fyrth and blue: Both of you have sour attitudes and if you two have SUCH a big problem with the trilogy, why don’t you write your own books so other people can **** on them? Anyway, I can’t wait to read Eldest and Empire when it comes out…speaking of which, does anyone know when its coming out?

  49. spikelizard says:

i finished both of the books about two weeks into jue. they are SO addictive. i got Eragon when it first came out and my stupid teacher wouldnt let me read it during school. two years later i started to read it again and got Eldest from a family member. when school got out for the summer i read Eragon and Eldest in two weeks (with breaks on the weekends and every three days or so). i think CP is one of the best authors ever and i really dont care where he got the characters and places. for all you people that complain about him “borrowing” from other authors, you need to think about the fact that once you read or see something, it is stuck in your mind and you will use it in other parts of life. as for the language, i think that CP used what he had to make them. you cant make everything in a fantasy book from our world ’cause then it wouldnt be a fantasy book. i think it is good of him to create a language because not many people will do that and continue to use it.and for the record, his words are pronouncable. once when i was messing around i foud a site that had audio pronuncations.

  50. Andy says:

This is in response to many of the comments above.

To Christa, there is no proof you can give that you are actually a writer of many novels. So please do not attempt to establish credibility by claiming to be one.

However, as for all those who have been called “idiots” and such, I DO respect all of your opinions.

While those who have studied in depth the languages of many fantasy novels and find Paolini’s creation to be sh*tty, I still find it amazing that he, in addition to writing a novel at 15, came up with a language of his own to integrate into it.

I am an avid reader of many genres of literature, including fantasy, and I found Eragon and Eldest to be extremely hard-to-put-down. The story rarely has a dull section in it, and Eragon’s use of magic and its relation to those around him is extremely intriguing.

I am looking for some books similar to Eragon and Eldest, I am an 17 year old male and while Eragon is apparently meant for younger audiences, I found it suitable for me. Any Suggestion?

    • blueyes says:

just like we cant tell fi christa is a novle writer how can we tell your a 17 year old “male”…

  52. fyrth is right says:

eragon was cool but eldest was ****. he shouldnt have fallen in love with arya and y the hell doesnt he eat meat? what the hell do u think animals are here for? so u can say” o look at that cow, im so hungry, but it would be mean to eat it” and then die of hunger? screw that im eatin the cow, and any other meat i can if im hungry. and in eldest CP(Christopher Paolini) tryes to make eragon seem all wise and has him talk all stupidly. wtf is with that.

And fyrth is still the smartest person to say anything about the book here.

  53. peasee says:

Of course, there’s no such thing as an entirely original fantasy story anymore. Plot-wise – they’re pretty much the same. What an author has to do is not come up with an original plot, they have to come up with an original way of telling it. So they must write lyrically, metaphorically, cleverly throw in themes that make the readers thing. Their characters have to go beyond the cliches of the fantasy formula – they have to have dimension and interact well.

I picked up Eragon because I’d heard a lot of buzz about it. Why all the buzz? Harry Potter has made children’s fantasy mainstream. The fact that the book was written by a 15 year old – wow, that gives it a story to sell to the customers! That was the gimmick right there. And now there’s a movie! Why’s Eragon so popular? Because it’s bankable, that’s why. And you know what, Britney Spears – also bankable. Talentless, but hey, easy to advertise.

The author gave it a good go, but I was bored with the book. No original storytelling here, and it was quite bland. In the end, this is exactly what it was meant to be – a children’s fantasy book. It is exactly like the hundreds of others I read as a child – entertainment for the moment, but in the end, not memorable. There is nothing here which makes this book stick out from the majority of children’s fantasy, and yet here it is, getting all the attention. It’s not the author’s fault, of course. It’s all the marketing.

The part I’m scratching my head over is why Paolini is being called “the next Tolkien” . I’m sorry, but WHAT?! Open up “The Lord of the Rings” for gawd’s sake! It’s descriptive, it’s lyrical and poetic, it conveys images and thoughts and character development within it’s paragraphs. “Eragon” doesn’t go beyond the words of the page.

I’m not jumping on the Eragon bandwagon. It’s just another book to add to the pile of ones I’ve read and if there wasn’t all the hub-bub about it, I would have most definitely have forgotten it by now. Won’t be picking up the sequels, won’t be seeing the movie.

  54. will says:

I thought that Eldest was better than the first book,Eragon. Eldest threw tons of curves at u like Eragon turning into a human-elf. does anyone know when the next book,Empire, is going to be published

  55. Paolini has some terrible writing…Ill say that. Paolini copied Tolkien…Ill say that. I can write better than Paolini (Im the same age too)…by a long shot…Ill say that.
Fact is…Paolinis storyline isnt bad…but BOY DOES IT ANGER ME WHEN I SEE NAMES COPIED FROM THE SILMARILLION AND LOTR. IT DRIVES ME BERSERK! I mean you think he could name his own places but calling something THE HADARAC DESERT! (DOES HARAD RING A BELL?!) or MELIAN (EXACT NAME OF THE MAIA WIFE OF KING THINGOL)…there are many more names if you have not realized.

Speaking of names – “Ajihad”? OH COME ON!

  57. Tom says:

Wow haha, theres a lot of **** in here about how much Christopher Paolini is bad at writing. I am an avid reader, reading at least 2 books a week since I was about 11 years old. Im 22 now and I believe i’m able to spot a hit when I see it. I saw Eragon on store shelves when it came out and I was a bit apprehensive. I picked it up looked it over, read a little while at the shop and believed that it copied a bit from LOTR. Well after a bit if indecision I decided to give it a try, you never know.

I’ve read both books now and can honestly say that CP knows how to write. This story is emotional where it should be and put me in a right state at various times. CP did not in any way take anything from LOTR, this is a FANTASY book. There is no quest to get rid of a ring, there weren’t even dragons abound in LOTR. His books are well done and I believe whatever he writes will and should be applauded in the future. The people on this site that say this book is contrived from other fantasy books would be obvious. How many fantasy books out there are completely original? You write about what you know and if what you know is what you read then of course that affects your writing style.

I congrat Christopher Paolini on his first two books, both have put him up there in my current favorite authors along with the like of Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Anne Rice, Laurell K. Hamilton, and many others who know what they are doing. I look forward to the third book in his series and scoff at those who relentless yell from the rafters about his book stealing ways. For shame people. for shame.

From: A well-read(Tooting my own horn here) guy just a bit angry at a few people who obviously don’t know anything about what they are talking about, as well as a guy who feels a sort of kindred spirit with those who commended CP for his wonderful work.

PS: And to think that he bagan to write Eragon at age 15, what a wonder, congrats again to Christopher Paolini, and may he never enter a forum and see some of the **** that some poeple post about wonderful books, lest he may surrender writing to something else crushing my hopes for more literary works from an up-and-coming master of the word.

  58. Tom says:

Also, I hate to double post but for those of you who like the trilogy so far and are looking for more about it go to Shurtugal.com for a bit more info

Also, the name Empire is not guaranteed to be the name of the book, the name as Christopher Paolini has said, isn’t yet set in stone and its not even been said by him that Empire was a possibility, though he hasn’t said anything against it.

Also As-so-far as the date of the 3rd book coming out, there hasn’t been a certain release date yet, thoug they say that it will not be in 2006, but closer to summer of 2007.

That is all and I bid thee farewell.

  60. peasee says:

Two books a week? If it’s all been fantasy, then I wouldn’t say you’re well read. I WOULD say that you know the fantasy genre really well. If you read a lot of current events, history, literature, biography, non-fiction – aka a VARIETY of books, well then you’re well read.

See, as much as I love fantasy (and any English major will agree with me on this next part), I do acknowledge that the majority of the genre is pure entertainment and doesn’t require much thought to get through or interpretation. I used to get all defensive when my English major friends poked fun at fantasy for being an easy read, until I started picking up other books and I realized that they were right.

  61. Assassin says:

    Hey Everyone,
I would like to say that Eragon and Eldest aren’t the best books I’ve had the pleasure of reading but they’re pretty close. Also, those of you who say CP is a very unskilled writer just recognize the fact that he wrote Eragon when he was still a teenager. I think that’s impressive. However, I don’t think u guys should give Fryth any trouble he’s just expressing his opinion, plus he’s only hurting himself bt acting in a negative manner studies show that you will die at a younger age. And an unhappy lifestyle. “live and let live”
    Peace Out!!!
p.s. I hope everyone enjoys the third book and the movies!

  62. Tigerlilly says:

I couldn’t help but glance at some of the entrys and was angered a bit be some of the immature responses. I really don’t appreciate when people insult authors, whether their books are bad or not. Don’t read them if you don’t like them. I could criticize every author out there, because there is always something wrong with their book or books. If you didn’t like the genre or the story even, don’t say, “it was ****.” I could say the same for Stephen King. His books were way too descriptive and downright boring at some points, but his books weren’t “****”. Just because you didn’t like the book doesn’t mean that others didn’t either. I love books, and all type for that fact, but when someone asks me about a book I didn’t have much interest in, I don’t say, “Oh, that book sucked, don’t read it.” I say, “it wasn’t to my liking, but it might be to yours.” It is not easy to write a book that a percentage of people enjoy. Don’t create havoc because you think the author doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Half the time, you don’t know the things you’re talking about. Paolini was just a kid doing his dream of writing what was in his mind. So what if it isn’t realistic. What fantasy book is realistic? Books like his are made to be that way, so you can dream of it and escape the world today. Tolkien’s books were thought of that way, and so were C.S. Lewis’ books too. They were all thought to be unrealistic and childish. Look where they are today. Don’t shatter his dream of writing what’s in his mind. Let him dream.

    • blueyes says:

Thank-you for writing that, i’ve been writing simaler things alot, but not as good as you…

  63. Aeris says:

I agree with Tigerlilly. What he’s accomplished for his age, is amazing, more than I could ever do. So quit being a bunch of name callers, and just enjoy the book. If you don’t like Harry potter, the Inheritance trilogy, or any other book for that matter, then don’t ******* read it. Simple as that. Don’t denigrate him, or his style, just give him the respect and credit every other author deserves for writing. They put themselves out there, to our mercy and criticism. Their books mirror their souls, it’s like a part of them. And although I don’t think he would take much offense or think twice to what a bunch of immature kids would say about him, it’s still very unpolite. What would Oromis say?? And don’t bring down those who enjoy Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, or other types of Fantasy Sci/fi. This isn’t a supid contest or who’s against who, or who’s cooler than who. The damn books are just meant to be enjoyed, so do just that.

Anywhoo, I happed to enjoy Eldest more so than Eragon, but I still enjoyed both. Can’t wait until the next book comes out, I’ll keep an eye out. Good job Chris Paolini!!! Thanks for the great read!

Ok, this is my first time writing to one of these so bear with me. I am not an avid reader and when I read it takes me week of picking up and putting down a book to finish it between gameing and working two jobs plus other responcibilities. However with Eragon I found myself doing nothing but reading. I lost all intrest in my games wich is a big deal and finish the book in a week. Slow by your standards im sure but for someone like me who reads only when forced to thats a landmark record. In Eldest it was far worse I would stay up late into the night reading even though I knew work would come early. I dont know how to breakdown the elements of the book as eloquently as most of you to tell you exactly what I loved about it but I can say that it had me completely wrapped up and I cant wait for the third one. I constantly think about when It might be released and thats something I never thought that I would say about a book.

Hi, I’m getting seriously vexed as I read some of these irritating reviews. A lot of you people seem to think Paolini is an amateur. It wouldn’t be anymore obvious if ‘AMATEUR’ was written beside his name on the front cover but that’s because he was fifteen when he wrote the first book! Can’t you give him a break? Did any of you write best sellers when you were fifteen? Scratch that, did any of you ever write best sellers? I thought not!

  70. Dave says:

Hi everyone. I am very vexed as I read some of these ignorant reviews. A lot of people seem to be calling Paolini an amateur. I thought, ‘It could not have been more obvious if ‘AMATEUR’ was written beside his name on the front cover.’ This is only because he was fifteen when he wrote it. Give him a break. Did any of you write a best-seller when you were fifteen? Scratch that, did any of you write a best-seller? I thought not.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the two books so far and I cannot wait until Empire comes out and also the Eragon film.
Most of the reviewers describe Eragon as a Lord of the Rings rip off. Everytime a book includes magic, dwarves and elves, you can’t brand it a Lord of the Rings rip off. It annoys me! Would someone please be so kind as to point out the similarities. Urguls aren’t that different from orcs and Brom isn’t too different from Gandalf (but what fantasy book doesn’t have an old, wise magician-sort of leader) but that is about it as far as I am concerned. Everyone seems to be missing the real rip off: Star Wars. The Inheritance trilogy is Star Wars with magic and dragons. Where to begin? O.K. Brom is Obi-Won Kenobi (Not sure of the spelling). They are both the old, wise, second last of their kind. I haven’t read Eldest in quite a while but you know the Mourning Sage, he is the Yoda of Inheritance. He went into hiding to train the new Jedi or Dragon Rider. The next similarity is the whole ‘I am your father!’ twist. Next, take a closer look at the passage where Brom tells everyone of how Galbatorix came to power in the opening chapters of Eragon. It is very alike how Vadar came to power. Anakin and Galbatorix were tested for power at the age of ten and both rose quickly up the ranks. His dragon dying is similar to Anakin’s mother dying. Arya the elf was imprisoned like Leia and Eragon and Murtagh went to rescue her like Luke and Han. Brom dies as Obi-Won does. Those were all just off the top of my head and I haven’t read the books recently so that shows how much they are alike. Now that you have read all of that, please don’t go thinking I hate Inheritance. It’s actually to the contrary. I love it and CP should all the support he can get and I hope he writes even more Sci-Fi or Fantasy books!!!

I am a female and usually i have no time ot read silly fantasy books but since i read Eragon it has changed how i feel about fantasy. Eldest for me is so far great although i tend to notice that at the start it contains lots of fighting. Although i am halfway through tjhe book i’m sure it will end great. I canniot wait for the third book.
Christopher Paolini to me is an inspiration and i love how his ideas flow freely in the book, it shows a lot of effort and a lot of good describing. Not many books can put you there in the middle of the story where you can see it through your own eyes and not many books make you feel sad happy or angry and i am pleased to say that Christopher Paolini’s has done that to me.
Although i didn’t cry in Eragon or Eldest so far i believe that for a young boy to write his first book then to continue is a lot of work.
I myself am writing a book so i know how it feels.
I love the way the books are set out and i know what a relief it must be when your book is finally published and out there for the world to see.
I am shocked that his book is so loved yet i myself can also understand why it is loved.
the book wasn’t plain at all or boring it was mostly up and down with twists and turns.

Well in conclusion it is a fantastic book and i think fantasy lovers would enjoy reading it as i know i have.
By the way i never put it down throughout breakfast, lunch or dinner,
And how amazing are the pictures on the book cover, it is exactly how i imagined the dragons.

Eragon, I belive is one of the better books I have read. Can i just say that i absolutly dissagree with everything that fyrth said (About 4th comment frrom the top) yYou are obviously ignorant, if you read with an open mind you would see that Eragon is a great book. You are a bullshitter… THere is a copy of this person so called opinion below! ******….

Look, I’’l do it right now.

Overall you make me sick, dickhead…. yeah they are all so shallow, you are a fuckwit!!! read the book they are indepth and individual… didn’t you see on the movie posers??? new york times bestseller!! which is more than you could say!! i wish i could say all of this to you.. the **** you wrote is the biggest bunch of garbagge in the world… yeah sick one.. trying to make up your own languarge and saying that it is “as un-pronouceable as Paolini’s.” oi before you start paying out someones languarge look at your own sad exuse for a name?? Fyth?? wtf??? loser… or better yet try and really make up your own langurage and make it seem like its not taken from any languarge on earth.. because if u read the book properly, it is fanasy and it doesnt have anything to do with our earth you literall ******.. god… it’s called imagination… get one!! or better still dont read FANASY books if you are just going to pay them out!!! i honestly can’t say how furious i am with you comments….

um could you please write a book so i can read it go onto a website and pay the **** out of it???

    • blueyes says:

oh my gosh you people are so uniormed!!!!!!!!!!!!\

THE THIRD BOOK ALREDY CAME OUT TIS CALLED BRISINGER AND PAOLINI IS WORKING ON THE 4TH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  90. Topuz says:

Is this some kind of joke? Eragon was maybe the single most poorly written, ill-conceived, pedantic, hackneyed, juvenile pile of dribble I’ve ever read in my entire life. The fact that someone would even mention it in the same sentence as Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, or the Chronicles of Narnia, shows exactly the kind of damage that popular culture is inflicting upon literature. It was a phenomenon bread of a novelty act: its blindingly inexperienced author Christopher Paolini. Of course a movie would be made of this book; Hollywood is ever seeking to stand on the shoulders of greater works, which is exactly what Paolini has done in his exercise in thrash-and-bash pop-lit, laughingly passed off as a novel. No, Eragon will not stand beside the afore mentioned great epics, it will be filed in the dusty, forgotten catacombs of other such ridiculous flashes in the pan as the Suri Cruise picture scandal and Pogs. Hollywood: well-done, surly you’ll rake in the cash along with the droves of gum chewing zombies who probably never even sat down to read the book in the first place, on which you so love to feed. Paolini: get yourself out of home-schooling for five minutes and realize that the world does not revolve around you.

First of all i think Eragon and Eldest are amazing books.
I just wanted to say that no matter wat ur view is u dont do ur side any favors by sounding completely ignorant when u use curse words.

  93. Dan says:

Well, I have just finished book two, and I have to say I was good, I have noticed some similarities to other books and other authors that I have read. And yes, I can tell that Chris has read David Eddings’ The Belgariad and Mallorean, and Stephen King’s The Dark Towers, Both of which I loved. Those are the two that struck me as obvious. Yes, there is some repeation in this genre, there has to be ( i.e. bad things go on in the world, young hero has something change his life, he leaves said life to try to fix it and ends up saving the whole world, all the while he just wants to go back to the way he was). If you want original go read Stienbeck’s Travels with Charlie, or Winter of our Discontent, or Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms. Or if you want to enlighten yourself read Plato’s The Republic or read the Fedralist papers by Hamilton. But save the S/F and Fantasy for your enjoyment.

Will this triolgy stand with LoTR or the above mentioned, we will see. Personaly I have enjoyed it so far, and can’t wait for book three, and that is what really counts (yes I am very selfish and only care about myself and my happiness). But before you critique Chris’ work, ask yourself; how many books have I written and of those how many were published? Or you could ask yourself “I wonder why Random House hasn’t called me back on the resume that I submited for that Editor postion? Anyway thats my two cents. Peace Love and don’t be a Hippy!

  95. maC says:

In my humble opinion Eragon and Eldest are very good books. I personally read a lot of novels and while they are not the absolute best novels in the world, they are not the worst either. It doesnt matter if some of the content is based off of others, there are almost no stories that havent been told, and CP has done a great job in creating a story that is a great addition to the fantasy genre.

Thank you and Have a nice Day.

  96. Westinda says:

I have enjoyed both Eragon and Eldest, the first of which was actually given to my son as a gift and after reading it I had to buy the second book when it came out. I thoroughly enjoyed both books and would say to anyone that has posted reviews rubbishing these works, ‘Why did you move onto book two if you didn’t rate the first one?’ I have read Tolkien, Terry Brookes. Stephen Donaldson et al and also enjoyed Philip Pullman. Enjoy them for what they are FANTASY! I wait with baited breath for the final episode.

    Have a nice life.

  97. Hezzer says:

Wow. You all have a lot of free time. I am an English Literature major and an avid reader. What you need to realize is that most hero epics follow a certain formula. It began with ancient Japanese folk tales and has existed for thousands of years. One can expand on it, but the basic line stays the same. (ever hear of something called a “marraige plot”? It’s been retold thousands of times, your typical love story) A great book depends on the story surrounding the formula. Like architecture. Same laws apply, but your corner McDonalds sure looks different than St Pauls. The point is, whether it’s told in as much mind numbing detail as Robert Jordan or as fast paced as Terry Brooks, it’s the story that we love. Paolini, although young and untried, told a story that people liked, whether he borrowed characters and plots, or not. Let’s face it, writing is tough. Dialog is tougher. None of us live in a vacuum, we all get our ideas from similar places. I’m interested to see how Paolini will grow with future works. I find it facinating to read books of such astounding simplicity as The Lovely Bones (which by the way Peter Jackson is now making into a movie)and see their public success. The characters are beautiful in their elemental forms. Less is more. I think some writers get too caught up in the details and forget the story. Just like movies, too many special effects are useless if the STORY is lost amongst them. I’ve read both of Paolini’s books, a few too many cliche’s and easy outs, but…enjoyable reads. If a book can make you feel for the characters and care about what happens to them on the next page, then the author has succeeded. Lord knows I’ve put down books in the third or fourth chapter because, well, they’re horrible.
Anyway, it’s Christopher whose laughing all the way to the bank. He’s got Hollywood in one pocket and Barnes and Noble in the other.
    Good night.

  98. Levi says:

Most of you pple are right about the book, IT’S AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!! and fyrth, why do you hate the book? Theres nothing wrong with it, infact, lets try to see you come up with anything better, if you think its so bad. And for all of you who dont know anything about the third book I can tell you one thing, It’s called
    “Empires”

P.S. HOW CAN YOU HATE THESE BOOKS??????!!!!!

  99. Murf says:

I think some of you are missing the point of these two books. It’s all fantasy. That’s the beautiful thing about books like Eragon and Eldest. The impossible things that happen, makes it thrilling and exciting. I have two teen boys and Christopher Paolini sets a good example of how much a young man can acomplished with a wild imagination and determination. Good Job, Christopher!

I would like to get an e-mail back from you but i understand you must have alot on your hands at the moment with the film and the 3rd book and everything. I hope the 3rd book comes out soon because i know it will be brilliant.

From a great and inspired fan megan.

MY YOUR SWORD STAY SHARP CHRISTOPHER POALINI.

  101. Bowman says:

Personally, I loved Eragon and Eldest. Okay, so there are a fair few discrepancies such as Eragon gaining an amazing ability to swordfight in the space of a few weeks, but… well, what can I say? It’s a fictional novel! There’s bound to be odd things like that happening.

As for other ‘problems’ such as the huge amount of steriotyping… well, it is nice to read something like this every once in a while. In my opinion it is, anyway! And besides, any stories with a hero generally follow a certain path; that’s what makes them interesting to the readers!

    ~Bowman~

  102. Kevin says:

This goes to fyrth and all those other dumb idiots who wrote about Chris. Chris is one of the best writers out there. I just got the book ” MYTHIC VISION the making of ERAGON,” and let me tell you this. Chris locked himself in his room not letting his family look at or read the book. His family didnt want to have a publisher, publish his book so they self-published Eragon. Chris would have to go to libraries across Montana and other states to get his book to sell. Because Chris’ family spent all their money publishing Eragon they went into debt and lost their house. Finally a publisher heard of Eragon and bought the trilogy. A couple months later someone bought the rights to make Eragon a world wide sensation. They where going to make Eragon a movie. This just shows what Chris had to give to get his book to sell. Now ill pay you $100 to anyone who would go through all that and get their book published and turned into a movie.

    *Kevin*

PS: I read eragon 7 times and Eldest 10 times. Eragon is my fav movie and it hasnt even came out yet.

  103. theboss says:

when is number 3 coming out ?I saw on a site that it would come out on October 11.

  104. Venhart says:

Well i managed to read through half of the reviews before i finally gave up. All of you are petty. The plain truth is Paolini doesn’t deserve the success he is getting. He is decent at best. I have read fantasy and science fiction since gr. 3, and now personally own a collection of over 300 fantasy novels alone. David Eddings, Robert Jordan, Tolkien, Terry Goodkind, JK Rowling, etc, etc, these are some of the best, and the only time Paolini came close to resting in these guy’s shadows was with Eragon. Eragon was a good book. Eldest was ****. As i read it, i accurately guessed everything that would happen. Duh, of coarse Murtagh and Eragon were bros. No **** the twins were evil. Was i the only one that guessed Murtagh would become an evil rider? Look at them, just really look at them and you will realise they don’t deserve the hype they have. Paolini really didn’t have much originality, he had some, but not much. His writing style is non-exhistant, and though it is fantasy, things happen in the books that are beyond even fantasy-real. It sickens me to know that he sold out to a producer so easily too. So he gets a movie, i’ve seen the trailer and it looks like ****. Goodkind has been approach by directors wanting to make films of his book about 2-dozen times. Each he refused until Raimi suggested a mini-series, Now that is something to look forward to. Robert Jordan created a complete world for his books, including an enormous history, and beleivable political exchanges. Rowling makes he characters in a way you can relate to. Eddings, is probably one of my most favorite writers, the world is amazing, the politics are there but not in over-abundance, and the characters are extremely easy to relate to. Paolini had none of this, his world is a patch-quilt of sections ripped from other books, he has no sense of politics, and the only kind of person who can relate to the characters are those who have a future in their mother’s basement playing ‘dungeons and dragons’ instead of facing the real world. No, Paolini does not even deserve to lay his eyes upon the shadow that the great writers cast.

Now as for my credentials to make these comments. I am an English Major, and have my Masters in Creative Writing. I am currently working as an editor for TOR, and am working on a book so far called ‘The Unrighteous’, but am thinking of a different name. Argue with what i said if you want but you’ll find most other profensionals agree.

  105. The Truth says:

Wow, thats all I have to say is wow. I now know what it takes to make myself a couple of million bucks within a matter of two years. Publish a completely unrealistic, not even mediocre novel. I read Eragon and Eldest. I have also heard all the opinions and critiques I could manage. First off, eragon learns to read within a week. Comes on guys… The guy, within a matter of a couple of days, learns to fight with his left hand as easily as he could with his right. Come on guys… Eragons dialogue, that in itself I could rant on about for days. Its cliche and totally unrealistic for a 15 years old peasant kid. Paolini strikes me as the type of guy who keeps a thesaurus close at hand. I’ve seen Eragon use a few obscure words that not even an ancient and experienced author ‘Stephen King’ had never used in ANY of his 50+ works.

Everyone speaks of the fact that a 15 year old wrote this novel. People, from what I read on his history, Eragon went through a load of editing before hitting the shelves, I’m under the assumption that a good percentage of Eragon was product of an editors fine tuning. No one cannot say that their isnt a Star wars reference, hell when Brom came into the picture I immediately knew he was gonna be an ex dragonrider. The, Obi Kenobi you might say. But then again, maybe authors of this new age and old get ideas from other peoples works. the problem here is that it is so blatantly obvious, like he throws the fact down your throat.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m, happy for the kid, nor would I wish his sudden fame taken from him because of disheartening critiques. But I do not see this kid as a child prodigy in any respect. I found myself not even caring for the characters, hell, when Brom died all I did was say, ’saw that coming.’

My opinion, Eragon is simply a product of a D&D kid that got a meal ticket because his family had their own publishing company and the funds to shove this novel down the throats of children. By the way, they call this a childrens novel, and yet, some of the scenes in the book seem a lil more harsh than what I would presume parents would want their kids reading.

Anywho, nothing against ol Chris, but the guy, in my opinion, is not a good writer. I think a good many published authors would agree.

  106. Sadie says:

i loved his books plain and simple, im very anxious to see what he brings in his next one. i do agree with many of these comments though i feel astonished that a few misfortunates have the balls to totally disregard christoper paolini’s work. and if they r so un-impressed, y is it that they bother voiceing their oppinions in a forum where no one appreiciates there comments apart from the other twisted groupies who join the indecent assult against Christophers masterpieces? and dont u dare say its too unreal. for gods sake it dosnt take many brain cells to calculate that A) its a fantasy novel B) He wrote it at quite a young age, ripe with imagination and C) that he must have done something rite as hes sold more copies of his book then the number of times all of us joint together will wipe our arse’s. so therefore i conclude my oppinion and curse those who think christopher paolini is worth anything beneath any other author out there. may i add that as far as too unreal goes, harry potter isnt that far behind.

  107. Jacob says:

Everyone in my opinion both the people who say paolini is the best an paolini is the worst are wrong. This is his first book and he had a pretty good, but addictive story line…millions of people love him. Now some people say that he is a sucky writer and sh*t like that. Yeah he could use some work, but you can’t just say he’s awful. If he was so bad he wouldn’t of made thousands of $ off of the people who buy his books. You also can’t just say he is the best. Yes he might make his story addictive, but just like anything else it deosn’t mean it’s a good story. Also…stop talking sh*t about hid made up langauge..he did the best he could. After all he is a very young writer.

  108. The Truth says:

Wow, Sadie, I bet your not a college grad eh?

  109. thomas says:

I would just like to point out that young writer or not, there is no excuse for plagarism- that’s the sort of thing that really won’t help you. It will get an instant fail in the real intellectual world. Also NO MORE CRYING OF SINGLE TEARS OR VOMITING! There is a limit to these things. His “made up language” is Old Norse and you may also notice his sword is 5 1/2 feet long or so yet he walks around with it tied to his belt. This suggests that his legs along have to be about 2 metres long.
By the way, this is a particular edition of the book where they cut over 30, 000 words.
For me the main addiction is playing find the other book, oh this includes Star Wars. Poor boy has first teacher die then goes to far away place to get new master, Leaves early, promises to return and then ends up defeated yet escapes. how original.

  110. Tyler says:

I thought that both books were awsome in Eldest i was kinda of confused who galbatorix dragons name was and murtagh his is thorn was it black or red??? getting excited about the 3rd!!!!!!!!

  111. Grim Shogun says:

Paolini’s writing is lacking in flavor or anything fresh.

He uses obscure words to try to make his books engaging, which is what amateurs do. You know, when you’re reading something weird and you’re thinking, ‘God, did this guy just pick up a thesaurus to make himself sound smarter?’ Yeah, poor Paolini…It was really obvious. I’ve tried to read one of his books and could not get past his useless descriptions, boring style, and hollow characters. Why should I care about Eragon?

I do not care if he writes well ‘for his age’. If he can’t come up to the standards of writers who actually know how to WRITE, then why bother? If he inspires you and other children, that’s wonderful. But his writing isn’t praiseworthy.

Here’s a question for all of you: If you picked up this book but had no idea how old the author was, what would you think of it? Would you still think it would be a good book? Would it still be written well? Would it be deeply engaging? Or would you just think it was ‘okay’, or ‘mediocre’, or just plain crappy?

I wonder if Paolini is in the process of improving his writing. I actually do think he has a lot of potential: he has the ability to write long epics and his writing is great…for his age. But he does not realize that if you’re going to have a story that looks like it’s been copied from something else (Star Wars), it better have SOMETHING that brings it to life: a twist, interesting characters, a vibrant and colorful writing style, a CHANGE in the predictable Hero’s Journey…Unfortunately he does not do any of these things. We’re instead left with a stereotypical story that doesn’t seem to grasp out at anything new or deviating or interesting.

Of course, there will be those that like his books…for some odd reason beyond me. If you like that kind of writing, then that’s wonderful. But that’s no reason to be immature about it by using expletives. It really doesn’t make the fans of Paolini’s work look too intelligent.

    Some quotes:

-fyrth ur da biggest *** ***** is da world!!! ur totally actin like a old man thts totally snobby seriously the books r gr8. how old r u anyhows 82? LOL
    - honestly that fyrth guy is an idiot
    - MAN THOSE BOOKS ARE GOOD!! I mean the idiot who said it was a bad book is just a ******, a big fat one too. All the people out there who like “Harry Potter” are STUPID, I swear to god.
    - First off, I just have to say this: All of you who think he is a bad writer for mixing up a bunch of different stories are complete retards who are just saying stuff like that because you are jealous and suck so much at writing yourselves that if you tried, and writing skill made you skinny, you would be so fat you would be selling shade in the summer time. Also, Fyrth is a F*cking ****** and wouldn’t know writer’s skill if it wiped it’s fat *ss in her face.
-One more thing to all you motherf*ckers out there.
    - hey i think that both books were excellent and cant wait till the third book comes out. And that fryth person why dont you shut the **** up. I’d like to see you write two books as long and well put together as trese were.
    - Wow. all u ppl are ******* ********. saying that the books suck. u can write a book nowadays without it being similar to somwone else’s. OH fucck this book. theres bad gramar. wow. idiots. most ppl in theis crappy empirea re uneducated so they have bad grammer. id like to see u write ur own language thats not ****** like fyrth the **** licker.
    - fyrth is the biggest fking ****** that woulnt know good writing if it shat on him

Good job, guys. I’m sure Paolini would be proud if he read your comments.

  112. Mastermind says:

I have read all of these comments and though i like Eragon and Eldest i didnt like the switch from Eragon to Roran. Even though his books were predictable at some parts I am still going to get the 3 book.

  113. ... says:

Eh, the books are ok, Eragon was by far better than Eldest in my opinion. As for CP’s writing style, I agree that he has taken many ideas from other books, but all the same the books turned out ok, though they were very predictable. For all you people claiming it to be unrealistic, it’s a fantasy novel, things aren’t supposed to be realistic, besides, as far as things such as the amount of time it took him to learn to use a sword, it would be boring as heck if he made the time span 3 years. Not to mension by the time the third book would be released Eragon would probably be in his well into his late 20’s or early 30’s with the time it would take to learn all of the stuff he knows. As far as the movie goes, I think it is a bad idea, I’ve watched the previews from sites and already I’ve seen many changes that were not for the better. If you have a long book (harry potter for instance) don’t turn it into a movie, it will drag on for hours boring people to death and annoying others who have read the book with all of the changes in the plot. Well, that’s all I have to say and for those of you telling the critics to get a life, please realize that everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

  114. Solijax says:

I love this book and i hope that u just don’t stop it on the 3rd book

  115. Rain says:

I just finished reading eragon and eldest for the 4th time. I can’t wait for th movie to come out. I know it won’t be the same as the book but still. i absolutley love those books. I heard from Chritopher that the 3rd will be the last one. but i bet It’ll Be thiick

  116. xenia1st says:

First of all, I truely loved the first two books; and cannot wait for the last. I enjoyed reading about dragons (such magnificent creatures) and Christopher has brought their beautiful natures to life in both books. Cheers to you.
Second of all, I have read many books, by many authors, in many different genres. I have only found a few that were not to my liking.(personally) BUT… I have never found one that was not well written. Otherwise it would not have been published. (publishers are quite demanding especially in this day and age)
A good story is like beauty. It is in the eye of the beholder. To REALLY enjoy reading, it takes passion and imagination. I believe that if you have both, no matter the writing style, and as long as it has a beginning, a plot, and an end; a story will be as good as you wish it to be. The author is just helping you along. Sometimes not as well as you would like. Some of us do not have the sufficient passion or imagination; and need that extra little boost we all call great writing. The fact that any author is published just shows that they have both attributes in overflowing abundance; and only wish to share them with us all. I have great respect for anyone who would put themselves out here for judgement.
Christopher Palioni has that overflowing abundance along with bravery to have written and published at such an early age. Our lives are always shaped by our environment and our experiences in it. No two stories are alike and none are different; but you have the ability to make each one your own.
Sorry for being long winded but that is my passion and imagination. Keep writing Christopher and you will always have fans. (LoL and sore critics) Always keep your head up and your chin out; and never let them get you down.
    Blessings on you and yours,
    Xenia1st
OH!! and to all of you with horribly wretched language problems, read more and your vocabulary will not only expand but your passion and imagination will flourish. Ta!

  117. Alecto says:

Disclaimer: I respect Paolini for his perserverence. To write books that long requires dedication. Go him. That doesn’t mean I think he has much talent.

“it would be boring as heck if he made the time span 3 years.”?

Oh dear. I’m sorry to break it to you, but it took more like 10 years to become proficient with the sword, at least. Boring? I don’t freaking care. All fiction is supposed to be realistic within the limits of the world. So it’s ok in fantasy for the purple balloon-riding aliens to show up in the climax of the book and drop a feather on the villain’s head, which would kill him, because it’s fantasy, it’s not supposed to be realistic. Don’t be stupid. It’s not supposed to follow the laws of *our* world- there is magic, fire-breathing animals, etc. Paolini could have set it up so that everyone in Frankenworl- I mean Alagaesia, could learn the sword in a week. Why not? It would be cool, original, and it wouldn’t be breaking the laws of *their* world.

Now, he was a good writer for his age. IF HE PUBLISHED IT AT FIFTEEN. Oh my goodness, people, Paolini ages just like everybody else! Eragon was published when Paolini was NINETEEN. Eldest was published when he was either twenty-one or twenty-three, I don’t remember.

So I shouldn’t be allowed to criticize him because I’m not an author who’s published millions of books? Does that mean I’m not allowed to criticize Bush because I’ve never been President?

    Dear Xenia1,

“OH!! and to all of you with horribly wretched language problems, read more and your vocabulary will not only expand but your passion and imagination will flourish. Ta!”

I agree. But don’t read Eldest or Eragon because Paolini uses a lot of his words wrong.

“fermented orange light” (of a sunset)
    definitions of fermented:
To produce by or as if by fermentation.
    To cause to undergo fermentation.
To make turbulent; excite or agitate.
    (American Heritage Dictionary)
I don’t think “turbulent” when I think “sunset”

And for Chrissakes, vermilion means red, not green.

I’m done, although there’s a whole lot more to kill.

  118. ... says:

Someone really does need to get out into the real world, it is a book, it’s as simple as that, it’s not really, so does it matter how long it REALLY takes or how long it SHOULD take, no. It’s a simple matter of reading the book for a personal enjoyment. If you end up not liking to book, then don’t get worked up about it, the world won’t end.

  119. Diane says:

Just read Eragon, the dragon is cute, but that’s it. The first part of the book sounds like replica of books by David Eddings, from the storyteller old man Brom, to the sign in Eragon’s hand.

  120. Alexander says:

I liked the books but I have to admit that most of his “plot twists” were quit predictable… My favorite characters in order:

    1.Murtagh
    2.Thorn
    3.Angela
    4.Arya
    5.Oromis
    6.Glaedr
    7.Saphira
    8. eragon

I Found THE SOTRIES VERY WELL WRITEN FOR A MAN OF HIS AGE. THE CHARATERS WERE COMPLEX JUST LIKE REAL PEOPLE!

  122. Z says:

Okay, first of all, would people stop saying it was well written for the age he wrote it at. It shouldn’t matter what age he wrote it at. A book should tell a good story and be well written, regardless of the author’s age. This one wasn’t.

Second, Christopher Paolini did not lock himself in his room and not let his family read it. THEY HELPED HIM WRITE IT!!! His sister Angela helped him write the scenes that Angela the herbalist was in. His parents edited the book, and helped him write the beginning. He didn’t write it by himself. He’s not a brilliant prodigious writer, and has a serious lack of original ideas.

His book would never have been published at a real publishing company. Eragon was published by his family’s publishing company, a vanity press. He weasled his way into school auditoriums and libraries to sell his book, and then makes speeches dressed like he’s from the renaissance faire.

Eragon isn’t an amazing book. It’s just C.P.’s way of living an action-filled life vicariously through his protagonist.

  123. sans says:

ok i would just like to say in not done wth the 2nd book yet but i love it so far
i can see paolini calling the book empire but that might not be what it is called i think it will come out prouble around summer time if it dont i think some people might start a riot

    peace paolini

  124. Vicky says:

“It shouldn’t matter what age he wrote it at. A book should tell a good story and be well written, regardless of the author’s age. This one wasn’t.”

That’s exactly the way I feel–unfortunately, others tend to attack me whenever I bring up the Eragon subject, so I’ve mainly just dropped it. People should be allowed to state their opinions without 50 people rushing to attack–often not just the opinion or statement made, but the person him/herself who wrote it. You should all be immensely proud of yourself.

I applaud Paolini in the fact that he actually wrote two 500 page+ books at his age. But I really don’t think that his writing deserves the praise it gets. I’ve known several teenagers who can write just as well or better. Broaden your world–he is not the only one with young “writing skill”, just one of the few to have the motivation to write a full length book. I don’t believe someone should have half their fame come from their age alone.

  125. Fantasy Reader says:

For the person who was looking for other good book series to read:

The Sword of Shannara Series (The first 8 were good…it started to get old after that)
    The Wheel of Time Series
The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit (though i’m sure you have read those)
    The Mists of Avalon
    Silvers Bane/Silvers Edge-Anne Kelleher
    A Wrinkle In Time-L’Engle Madelien
    The Dark is Rising-Susan Cooper

It’s been a while since I have read some of these and some are more older books, while some are more younger people books but I liked them all. Hope that helps

And i did like these books. Fantasy is fantasy. Ur always gonna have some of the same elements

  126. Sarah Nicole says:

    Hey everyone-

I have been reading and studying the gramatics and depth-plots of books for many years; and to put it simply, Christopher Paolini is an amazing author, and his brilliance is unmatched. I have read both books dozens of times, and ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM!!! I suggest that if you were stupid enough buy the 2nd book even afer you disliked the 1st, you shouldn’t put your stupidity on the internet for everyone to see.

And as a plus to Mr. Paolini, he’s hott too!

  127. st jimmy says:

  128. Mario Compean says:

I Have read both books. History is nice and the way it is writen is great . My kids haven’t read much before. Basicaly because when them found H.P. and the joy of reading at the same time, the movies came so soon, and they found easyer (pitty isn’t it?), after that disappointed experience I bring Eragon and Eldest home, they really love it (versions in spanish, we are from Mexico) and now they are waiting for book 3 (when is arriving bookstores?) and also they are reading a lot more (titles like Narnia, and Alice in wonderland, and so on)

Because of all this thanks to Christopher and we will be waiting.

  129. Reenae says:

Started reading Eragon last couple of days and already 1/3 thru the book. Sad to say that the portion that I read until now have the most remarkable similarity to The Lord of the Rings and a bit of Harry Potter. The similarity is mostly in the world he set up and the plot. Hey, even a bit of Anne McCaffrey Dragon Series.

I would finish my reading and continue with The Eldest, even go and see the movie. However, on the originality score, Mr Christopher Paolini is really low on my list. Pity those really good authors that squeezed their brains to come up with new original stories (that luckily for them, become best sellers) and then come Mr Paolini, that cash in on their hard work.

Mr Paolini, I am looking forward to a new original story by you. By far, you are not the baddest author. Maybe after the completion of the Inheritance Trilogy?

The wind ripped through his hair as he leaned over the edge of the mossy cliff. The darkness consumed his sight blocking her from his view
Please be all right! Please be alive!
His knuckles were white from the force he was gripping the the wet, slippy rocks beneath him. His eyes strained against the stabbing wind
    There! Was that her?
He saw something stir a few feet blow him and gritting his teeth in pain he shot a small burst of blue light downwards, which lit the cave in a mencing blue light
She was there…sprawled over the jagged rocks. Her let arm stuck out at an odd angle while the wind visously whipped through her black hair to reveal a thin trickle of a dark fluid slowly creeping down her smooth skin.

  131. Sam says:

To everyone that had something bad to say about Eragon or Eldest:

If you hate Christopher Paolini and his first book so much, why did you buy the second, and even bother coming to a forum to ***** about it? I will start listening to your bitching and whining about these stories the second you publish a best selling fantasy book.

    Thankyou

  132. Tiff says:

    I agree with you Sam!!
Chris what was that about? It’s really cool!

Eragon & Eldest rock and I can’t wait for the 3rd book to come out!

And to those who have nothing positive to say for the series: here’s a thought, save your money, and don’t buy the third installment of this series which, much to your dismay, is destined to be the quintessential classic fantasy series of our time.

althought this was way up there, i tottally and completly agree with me, alot of you who are tearing it down because of it’s unoriginal, it’s fantasy, most fantasy are like that. but the thing that none of you have talked about is creatures(well atleast from all of them i have read). Christopher, unlike many fantasy writers, takes much perspective into his book. He does this better than toilken himself, who describes goblins as vile beast. He shows that urgals and kull’s arn’t just heartless creatures, that they have a sense of honor and pride, and they have families, and as the story devealops, eragon relizes that all living cretures aren’t just visous monsters. He also shows the dwarves relgion and the way they think, same with the elves.also unlike toilken or other fantasy writers,he puts logic into the use of magic, its not just once you learn a spell, you can use it and there will be no consecence. it takes life force that is equal to how much it wouyld take to phiscally do the task. the books also has many twists and turns. for such a young age, christopher seems to be able to see things from other prespective besides from the hero, i mean he doesn’t make it look like there is any creature that is evil or does things just to cause torture. this book easily sucked me in by these points in more. to think such a young lad could write such a book. remarkable

  134. Chris says:

All I got to say is it cept my intrest longer than Lord of the rings, or Harry Potter, No matter how I tried I couldent get past the 1st chapter of each. few books keep my intrest this was one and I just want the third now so I can finish it. Oh by the way violent books keep my intrest like RE series, and Star Ship Trooper

  135. Keena says:

I have nothing but abmiration for Christopher Paolini. I am in the process of re-reading Eldest for the fifth time and I’m still hooked on the books. Every time I read one of his novels I notice another detail or connection that I didn’t catch the last time. I am amazed that Christopher Paolini was able to plan out and write these books. I am in the process of outlining my own fantasy series, though I doubt it will ever be published…. Anyway I completely disagree with those people who say that Eragon and Eldest are pathetically unorigional. As wiseyoungman said, most fantasy books follow one of only a few central themes. Some say that Paolini has borrowed ideas from other autors, but really, what writer hasn’t? Do you think that Tolkien, Rowling, Lackey, Mallory, Jordan, Pierce, and all the other great fantast writers, pulled the ideas for their storys out of thin air? No, all writers work is influenced by others in some way. Ideas are constantly being recycled and reused. Most fantasy books have some form of magic in them. Just because Paolini didn’t “recreate the wheel” and completely revamp the concept of magic doesn’t mean he’s taking others ideas for his own. I challenge you to find another book where magic follows the same rules and is used in the same way as in the Inheritance trilogy. You won’t suceed.
In conclusion I would like say to those who have posted bad reviews: If you think the books are so awful why are you wasting your time writing long missives about how bad they are?

  136. hello says:

I know im like a year late but that fyrth is a total *******. Chris paolini is just about the best living and working author alive besides johnathan stroud. Fyrth you can take ur trash talk and shove it up your ***. Peace

P.s. The eragon movie is a total peice of poop. In the book he has brown hair and brown eyes. Here he has blue eyes, brown hair and blonde highlights. He looks like a sissy.

  138. wiseyoungman says:

now hello, fyth can have his opinions and should not be judge by them, although i can tell its surprising to many of you but, there are people who think he is just the stupidest author in the world while others priase him. its the same with Harry potter, some people love it some people hate it. Rember never judge some1’s opinion for it is theres and if they want to expres it then let them. not judging some1 opintion is is part of giving respect to some1, and every1 deseverves to be treated with respect. so please stop disrespecting eaach other, respect is a very important thing to me.

you rip off others, you should be punished. haven’t read these books, and probably won’t. the commercials for the movie would make anyone older than the author think of dragonriders of pern, but now this schlock will likely impair that movie when it does come out, forcing the great unwashed to think a story started decades ago is ripping off this eragon drivel. just like nearly everything in film and music, the literary world seems to be heading down the same path devoid of original imagination. original ideas can’t be produced, so change the past, rework & rewrite, slap on a brand new bow and say it’s now your idea but new and improved. it’s no wonder some of the greatest sci-fi/fantasy authors either take decades before allowing their works to become film, or never do. they probably can’t stand to see their vision blurred. honestly, this kid wrote three books in the past several years and the first is going to film, yet great authors like piers anthony, anne mccaffrey, terry brooks, etc. have yet to do the same? seems like this kid and his family saw their meal ticket and are running with it.

my own son loves the harry potter flicks, but has yet to read the books. seeing the chronicles of narnia movie inspired him to read the books, at least start. i’d rather he show no interest in this ****. i’ll show him some of the better authors as he matures and can handle the books. right now, he can stick to watching doctor who with me, plugging away at the narnia books (yes, all of them, there were seven, for the kids who may not know) and reading most everything he can get his hands on. i’ll stick to thrillers/mysteries, since i haven’t seen much sci-fi/fantasy that interests me lately.

  147. No...Yo Moma says:

Um anyone who likes this drivel is a loser. The kid could not write a book that is able to be enjoyed by anyone older than 10. He is no Tolkein, He is no Roger Zelazny. He is no Stephen King. Hes some kid who got a break and got his books published. If you like *** psuedo fantasy then these are the books for you. If you enjoy good fantasy , maybe with a bit of sci-fi and some originality, then check out the Dark Tower series or Nine princes of Amber.

  148. wiseyoungman says:

no, if some one who reads these books and loves them, they are not a “loser” or anyother things. it means that they have different taste in books. and about your son reading, mkat, although hes reading them because he liked the movie, he still is reading, and you should encorage him to read those books, even if you think they are stupid books, he might get addicted to reading and then start reading other good books, not many kids like reading these days you know

  149. mkat1970 says:

my son’s reading has absolutely nothing to do with the narnia movie. he’s always been an avid reader. after we saw narnia, we talked about the fact that it was based on one of a series of books, and that i had read all of them when i was only a little older than him, and happen to own the entire series which i pointed out on the bookshelf. he took it upon himself to dig one out and start reading. i don’t discourage him from reading anything (i can’t yet see the attraction to the captain underpants books, but he is a first grader), but i do suggest things that i found to be good.

i tend to agree with no…yo mama. as witnessed by many of the posts, this so called author appeals to a demographic largely younger than himself. it’s also apparent that this demographic (see the large variety of posts obviously suffering from proper instruction in writing the english language) lacks better influences and inspirations, and this is by no means limited to the literary world. authors such as tolkein, brooks, anthony, mccaffrey, lewis, king and zelzany (not to slight others, just can’t list everyone) have works that live on through generations because of their quality. for similar reasons, people such as mc hammer, britney spears, menudo, etc. and very likely this author will disappear into obscurity. why do you think acts like the rolling stones continue to be popular? parents that love the music share it with their children, and it gains new life. sure, some children reading this book may hold it dear to their hearts for all their lives and share it with their children. but when the numbers are not as great as some of the aforementioned authors, the direction is already headed downhill.

as i stated previously, the whole situation seems overly opportunistic and geared toward providing him/his family with their meal ticket. it would not surprise me if several more of these “prodigy” authors appear in the next several years, along with the movie deals to follow. apparently it’s far easier to put together a stew of the ideas of others, repackage and rephrase and then sell the movie rights, than it is to develop solid stories that stand the test of time, even without movies. too bad we all don’t have the connections this kid does to publishing success.

  150. wow fan says:

I have read most of this forum and i think you guys have some good points.however ihave to agree that this is a forum/reveiw(**** i dont know how to spell that!) and not a cuss – u – out thing you find on myspace(not saying anything against it). I think that Mr Paolini is a very good young writer with a lot of potential. he has made a lot of progress between eragon and eldest.it is not odd that he had not secified the swordplay . seriosly, do you really want to hear about this stance , this strike, that parry, that manuever.I also think that fyrth needs to write his own book because he sounded so immature.the languages, especially the many different languages, are very creative. I myself am starting to write a book so i admire paolini. Keep up the good work!

  151. daedalus says:

After reading all the negative comments directed torwards paolini I am shocked at the ignorance of them first of maybe some of you forgot the fact that paolini intended his book to be for young readers like 14-17 so of course it wont be that complex but his books are still very good. Also remeber that the basic layout of all his books had been planned out in his early teen years (15)! without any formal writing lessons and his books were far beyond older writers. Writing an entire set of books at that age is much more than you people (fryth) are capable of, at least wiat until his last book comes out before you judge.

  152. daedalus says:

For those you did not enjoy reading these books maybe you like the audio version of it. It is very well read.

  153. daedalus says:

I have read far worse books by older writers. one of the worst books I have have read is “wolf moon” by charles de lint but I have not read his other books so I can not judge but it is pretty bad.

I have read Eragon and Eldest about a hundred time each. I’m reading Eldest again. I Think that Christopher Paolini is one of the most inspiring and creative writers of this century. I can’t wait until the 3rd book come out. I wounder what thrilling adventures await us in the last book. i can’t wait for this movie to come out either.

  155. Cman says:

To all of you who think that Christopher Paolini copied alot of stuff off of lord of the rings I agree with you.
    BUT!
In my opinion Chris toke the idea of lord of the rings and turned it into the story it was made to be. Thereby modifying it ten fold.
Before you say a bunch of **** about how awsome lord of the rings is and how bad Eragon is and how wrong you think I am, think about what I’m saying. If you read Eragon first before you read the lord of the rings books and you didn’t see the awsome graphics put into the movie and you only focused on the storys, would you honistly think that Christopher Paolini was a horrible author who made **** for a living and completly stole the idea of lord of the rings making a horrible story?
If you agree with me that Christopher Paolini turned the idea of lord of the rings into something way better e-mail me at connor_cohrt@yahoo.com.

  156. hello says:

hey cman i think you have a point. If CP had just stolen a bunch of ideas from Tolkein wouldnt the publishers had noticed? The book would have been tossed into the pile of manuscripts that never make it but had great potential

  157. ChristopherPSUCKS says:

HE STOLE TONNES OF IDEAS AND IS **** AT WRITING WHAT KIND OF PERSON DOESN’T GO TO UNI CAUSE HE HAS PUBLISHED 2/3 BOOKS IN A SERIES AND FEELS HE IS SET FOR LIFE WHEN HE WILL NEVER WRITE ANYTHING ELSE AGAIN HE IS THE CRAPPEST WORST MOST RUBBISH WRITER EVER HE HAS NO POTENTIAL AND I HAVE READ HIS BOOKS AND I KNOW THAT THIS IS WHAT I THINK

  159. I got one more thing to say to all you un educated pig headed people out here I think tha paoloni is very fuent writer. He did not copie those books of the lord of the rings. they are origenal. empire(if thats what its called)…i anticipate greatness. this man can flat out right. all you people who dont like it go read dr. suess or something because aparently you have no respect or taste for a good tale.
future movies…this director is noot allowed to say the word eragon for the rest of his life. he didnt even care about the making of the movie. he could have made it a great movie and a big hit. now i have to tell everyone who hasnt already been put through this torture to save themselves the money and dont go see the the movie that goes with my favorite book one. hopefully they get a new director that cares about what hes doing and realizes that this next movie can be great.
good luck on the rest of the stories and movies! all you people who like the books stay strong and get people to read the books before they make a judgement on the actual story. and those who dont like the books…have fun reading your dr. suess(no insult to the dr. i like him. but hes nothing compared to paolini) if you hate these stories so much quit comenting on eragon fansites! z youre a dumbass mkat 1970 youre a dipshit. you havent even read the staries and you think the world revolves around you and your generation. you heard of shakespeare? if nobody used other peoples writing for inspiration there would be no new stories or movies. do yourself a favor find a tall building clinb to the top and jump off

  161. Keena says:

I agree with xpert, the Eragon movie is awful. I had been looking forward to seeing it for a long time but I was extremely disapointed. The movie didn’t follow the storyline at all. I expected a few changes to the polt, it is a movie after all, but the amount of changes was rediculus. It IS loke the director didn;t bother to read the book. The movie is a disgrace to the novel. If you’ve never read the book definetly do not go see the movie. It is just a shame that such a great book was so badly translated to the big screen.
Going to the Eragon movie is a waste of money.

Also if you do not heed my advice and still go to see it, I recommend not taking young children. Though the movie is only rated PG there are some scenec and a few parts of the plot that may disturb young viewers. I sat next to a man and his child, proabaly about 5 years old, in the theater. I heard the boy ask his father, more then once mind you, “Are they all dead daddy?”, It was a bit disturbing. What was really strange was the number of small children that were in the theater when I saw the movie, there had to have been over two dozen.

Just a word of caution to potential viewers.

I doubt if they’ll be great (jus my humble opinion), but then again he started at 15, and i din even understand some of the words in the books at that age, so its really quite a start.. Cut the guy some slack ya? :>

  165. jab says:

i agree, the movie DID suck. If you are going to read the book, watch the movie first. then it will be more enjoyable, because you won’t know it ias wrong.

  166. Alice says:

I think that the the books were great. They were really addictive reads. I seriosly couldnt put them down. I would like to comment however that they really was similar to the Lord of the Rings. It also has some luke skywalker Darth qualities about it.
To start with the The lord of the rings
    #1 Arya- sounds like Arwen
    #2 Eragorn- sounds like Aragorn
#3 Roran- Accept for one letter, Rohan
#4 Dragon riders- Nazgul (might be dark but the idea is still there)
#4 Arya’s description- Very similar to Arwens black hair elven
#5 Dwarves- Had infact retreated away from the other peoples of middle earth
#6 People of the land- there had been three main people of middle earth the Dwarves Elves and Humans the same in the Eragon books.
#7 Urgals- orcs evil creatures that inhabit the land conrtoled by a master unable to come togther without one.
#8 Elves- Both sets came from across the sea.
#9 Humans- The most common of all the people living in Alaglesia look set to take over the land soma as lotr.
#10 Elves lives and life- (both books) very graceful have the best craftsmanship and they are immortal.
#11 Adoption- Both Eragon and Frodo are adopted by a relitave.
#12 Power Struggle- Galatorix and Saruman men in positions for good who turn evil. (a common plot I know but hey its the same)
#13 Love- Arya and Eragon are Elf and man Just like Aregon and Ardwen. Eragon and Aregon also have extended lives.

Starwars. Not too many but I felt the whole “Luke I am your father” thing was used in this story.Come on both dads are being used by a someone above them and are the second in th eline of evil.
#2 Both boys also didn’t know who their fathers were unlill they were young men.
#3 Both had Mothers and siblings they never knew about.
#4 Both were again raised by relatives.
#5 Both had a mentor at the ready for their adventure that ends up dying on them once they have theis feet firm in their adventure. Eragon had Brom and Like had OB1

Just some I could think of. This may give insight into why the movie Eragon was so different or didn’t stick to the novel as people wanted. They prbably wanted to make the many similarities of the two books less common as the way Chris cleary has. Come on Arya in the movie would look almost identical to Liv Tylers Ardwen in Lord of the rings if she had her hair black.
I also agree that the movie Eragon will never beat the lotr as Peter Jackson is the best!!!!!!!

  167. andrew says:

i wonder wy Eragon wont admit his feelings for Arya.

brom is eraogn’s father and morzan is murtagh’s father but both have the same mother selena and there is going to be a green dragon in book three

  174. Durza rox says:

cesar ur rong morzans eragons father not brom but ur rite about the third book. The film woz da worst compared 2 da book i agree wiv Eragon nd I also agree wiv xpurt da director probably didnt read da book. Keena ur rite it is a bit disturbin. It is funny in places though. Id bin waitin 4 it to come out 4 ages nd den it comes up wiv dis load ov junk. DURZA ROXS but why does he get more grotesque throughout da movie?Eragon movie was rubbish there was nofin out of the book nd evry1 seems 2 fink so 2. im gona make another Eragon movie thats actualy gona b good! I went wiv a cople of frends. DURZA ROCKED in it but of corse he had 2 die. The movie was lik somfin totaly difrent. The Razac didnt die Durza didnt die that way Eragon got captured nd taken 2 Gilead not went 2 Gilead at his own free wil. Brom got kild by da razac not he kils dem nd not he gets kild by Durza. Those were mistakes out of many.Just SOME of my favourite characters in order
    DURZA
    Arya
    Saphira
    Brom
    Eragon
    Bye. DURZA ROX

  175. steve says:

personally i thought eragon and eldest were fairly good books, as so many other people have said it is fantasy and so you expect the impossible to happen, but i do think that he has been influenced by to many outside sources, as i was reading eldest it struck cords of star wars in my head as i am sure it did with a lot of others, also i found that in eragon the book was padded by him going from one town to another just to find the shipping papers for the oil the raz ac were using, again that struck cords of david eddings work, for a writer of fifteen i have to take my hat of to him, i know i could not produce or even hope to produce work of the standard he has but i would not say that he was the next tolken, unless he learns to develope his own writting style and not be so quick to adopt others. i will still read the third book when it comes out though as i am curious as to how the story will end.

  176. jon says:

Personally i loved both books. With that vision that Eragon had in the first book (of the to dragons flying and someone standing alone) it makes me really wonder whats gonna happen.
Though i dare say that the movie was way different from the book and that it didnt do it any justice. Not to mention that the actors they chose didnt even match the books discriptions of their characters. Arya supposed to have black hair not blonde. And when in the books do you ever actually see Galabatorix.
I’d say that if you really want to see the movie wait till its on DVD and rent it for a few dollars instead of paying $7.5 per person to watch it.

  177. hello says:

there is more on the site i found. here is the link http://www.answers.com/topic/book-3-inheritance-trilogy. Enjoy!

  178. shadeslayer says:

the books were totally awesome and i cant wait for the third to come out. the movie, in my opinion, completely wasn’t that good. better than the third and fourth HP movies, but not the best. although saphira was awesome

  179. Durza rox says:

  181. I don't read books I devour them says:

I am an older lady and I would just like to say that I have read many books, both good and bad, and I enjoyed both Eragon and Eldest very much. What attracted me to the books was the movie – I saw the trailer on TV and wanted to check out the novels. There are very few stories that have a very original plot line – CP brings a fresh look at an old favorite. So what if he combined ideas from different sources! There are authors out there that have taken plot lines and characters right out of books and movies for their stories and not done as well. I am anxiously waiting for the next book to come out.

To many of you who have written here – you would have more credibility if you would use proper spelling, grammer and punctuation and less cursing. It would make your comments sound more thought out instead of just writing for the hell of it to see your name posted.

Thank you to the providers of this site to let us all have a place to let our feelings be known.

  182. I don't read books I devour them says:

I also want to add to my previous note – if you enjoyed Eragon and Eldest, you should read Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders Of Pern books, if you haven’t already.

If anyone would like to suggest other books that are good, I would like to see it.

  183. shae says:

The books are great! They are impossible to put down! I could read it over and over again!

  184. bobberton says:

    Yep, this book sucks ****.

  185. Faolin says:

I found this book to be very enjoyable. Every author is influenced by those he read before writing his own works. Many of you have said that you think his book is a collage of other writers’ works. Naturally, CP has read many of the same fantasies and Sci-Fi s as any of us would have. His ideas aren’t unoriginal they’re just bound be the ideas of the genre. I applaud him for giving it his all and I applaud those that helped him publish it. His language was weak, but like someone mentioned he’s not a linguist. He isn’t Tolkien, who wrote his books after developing an entire language, he’s Christopher Paolini. He wanted to write an exciting fantasy, not a language. He used what he could to add flavor. I loved this book.

If anyone has info on #3, post! Release date?

there is more on the site i found. here is the link” alright hello
this list of yours? ya itsbasically the most obvious thing ever the cover is obviously going to have a dragon becausee the other two did, the new rider thing is pretty clear. arya will of course be the new rider because her dragon is going to be male and it and saphira are going to mate thus continueing the race of dragons while arya and eragon get together. the varden will of course reject nassuada because she is young and female and its the only place her storyline could possibly go. this book is possibly the least original peice of literature ever, my english class is studying heros and such in literature and fairy tale and this is what this series is turning out to be, a fairy tale. eragon will not die in the end because its a kid freindly book. hence the movie being pg. which is just moronic because its not possible to display “epic battle scenes” in a pg movie. if you would like to read something that requires brainpower to get through go buy something by robert jordan or george RR martin. the song of ice and fire is epic and original as is the wheel of time. go buy them and realize that fantasy can be a genre that ecompasses all the aspects of history and warfare. oh and a footnote on history.

the histoy in this book is just terrible. there is in fact no history, it spans maybe like. 100 years worth of history

if it were scaled correctly because the history is far too sparse

also the whole humans coming thing is copied from the lord of the rings

and the first sentence is really stolen from the wheel of time

so if you would like something you need to use your brain on pick up the above authors books
if thats not your speed pick up something by R.A. salvatorre

he has this little thing called character development

    and good fight scenes

  187. hello says:

Faolin i have info on book threee and i posted most of what i knew on dec 29 06. Thanks for the grammar lesson I don’t read books I devour then.

  188. hello says:

    kiss my *** ryan

  189. I don't read books, I devour them says:

I found another dragon author – his name is Chris Bunch. His first book of a trilogy is called Dragonmaster, the second is Knighthood of the Dragon and the third is The Last Battle. It’s about dragons being used in warfare. Maybe not the best writing, but enjoyable.

Does anybody have any news on when the third Inheritance book comes out?

  190. Keena says:

    Just a quick warning –

DO NOT SEE THE ERAGON MOVIE!!!!!!

Its a waste of money to actualy pay to see it. They have completely changed everything about the books! I was extremely disappointed, having looked forward to the release of the movie for months, when I saw it in theaters. Though it can be expected for an movie based on a book to have changes in the plot, the butchering the film makers did to Eragon was ridiculus. Everything was changed, everything. Parts that are key to the overall storyline of the series are completely left out or changed beyond recognition. Major characters are omitted or their personalities altered. The movie fails to acuratly represent the motives behind the characters actions. Or, far worse, represents them in a completely different way then Paolini did in the books. Its almost as if the producers never even read Eragon (or Eldest, which would have proabably have been a good idea as well).

I was surprised at the PG rating the movie recieved, at least before I saw it. I wondered how the movie could be an acurate representaton of the book if it had only a PG-13 rating. As stated previously the movie was nothing like the books, explaining the low rating. However after I viewed the movie I had to agree that the plotline is distinctly childish. It has an air of a fairy tale about it, with none of the seriousness which I find so appealing in the books. Though some of the Battle scenes have been censored there are still some parts in this very childish movie which may upset young viewers. When I saw the movie in the theater there was a man and his perhaps 4 year old son sitting next to me. Though the child made many slightly disturbing comments to his father throught the movie the one that really stuck in my mind was when he asked his father “Are they all dead daddy?”. Keep in mind that this child was only perhaps three or four years old. What really surprised me was the number of very young children whom were brought to the movie by their parents. There was proabably more then two dozen young children in the theater when I saw the movie.

So if you still feel compeled to see the movie atleast read the book first.

  191. Keena says:

A great series to look into if your interested in fantasy is The Obsidian Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory. Though there is a dragon in the books, the plot isn’t centered around dragons. However it is a very interesting series and definetly worth taking a look at.

  192. ryan says:

    excellent comeback hello

i see that all of the eragon fans are real intellectuals, i obviously just dont understand. sorry to make fun of this book since it clearly takes someone with far more intellegent than I to understand it

  193. hello says:

Ok ok ryan, so now we think we are SO much smarter than everyone else do we? Well guess what! There’s a whole world out there beyond the library, so why don’t you get your corny, nerdy *** out there and live a little. How old are you? forteen? fifteen? Why don’t you go and try to do what paolini has done at a tender age. See how your *** does out there dickweed.

  194. hello says:

another great fantasy series is the saint of dragons by jason hightman.

  195. ryan says:

im sixteen have a girlfreind am writing two books RIGHT NOW and your comeback was moronic so, yes i assumed i was more intellegent than you

  196. hello says:

Silly silly ryan, little ryan. Does the little baby have a wee wittle girly friend? Well guess what bucko, old men with plastic surgery and a *** change don’t really count as girlfriends. As for your book, I will have you know that i am also writing one about two brothers living in a post apocolyptic world. So why don’t you take your ******, half thought out script and shove it up your ***? Lets compare plots and characters of our own two or three storys and see whos is better. See ya. P.S. if any of you are james bond fans then i suggest you look into the young bond series by charlie higson. Im out. Inheritance rulez

  197. ryan says:

don’t presume to think you know anything about me. neither of us can really prove anything i could be a ninety year old pedophile trying to catch children and you could be an obese middle aged black woman with back problems and too much time on her hands. so it doesnt even matter. no matter what you say i still think the book sucks, no matter what i say you think its good. so who really cares?

  198. eldest was good says:

Lord Iluvatar Ambarenya Earendil you and all of the people that think that that you can right eldest or eragon or some other book better than cristopher paeolini (or however you spell that) are total wanks!
It’s hard to right good. I go to yale and Got bored so i took a poll from about 600-100 students (I have alot of time on my hands) and all said they loved it and could do no better.

IF you dont think i”M telling the truth then bush is a moron and the war in iraq is stupid

    *******

  199. hello says:

    Sounds reasonable

  200. Rome says:

I just want to say this. To all you people who critizien Eragon and Eldest what the heck is wrong with you. If the books sucked so much why are they so famous and both bestsellers? Yes like you said some things were similar but think about this. When tolkien wrote LOTR and the Hobbit(which were both great) tolkien got the ideas from other places. Tolkien didn’t invent elves and dragons and dwarfs and all that. The idea of these mystical creatures have been around for thosands of years. And people! ITS FANTASY! All fantasy novels have some old wise guy (Brom,Gandalf,Dumbledore, ect.). It isn’t accurate to critisize him for things like that. Look at that newer seires Ranger’s Apprentice. It’s pretty popular but guess what the bad guys are called? Wargals yes Wargals just like urgals. Also just like in Eragon there is a guy controling the Wargals and when he get’s killed the Wargals are freed from his control. But hey it is still a great book. I just want to finish this by saying that when someone writes a book they have to get the basic ideas from somewhere. I am only 13 and have probaly read more books then many of you have in your life so far and Stand with Paolini. All of you are most likely just jealous, immature and have nothing better to do then critisize him. One last thing you can’t call the langauge giberish, Langauge has to be invented and for his book he invented one(even if some names are similar to ones from other books) his langauge makes perfect sense to fit his story and I think it was well thought of and planned well. Also to come up with all the words? fryths little gdjfgdagjk-man junk doesn’t count CP’s words and langauge was aucctually thought about fryth just hit random keys on the keyboard and then made it mean the first thing that popped into his head. I don’t go that way fryth but you know if you like men have fun. Thanks everyone for taking the time to read my little review. ^^

  201. get a life man says:

hahaha wow i am such a ******* loser i just spent at least an hour reading almost all of these comments. And i just have to say one thing WE ALL NEED TO GET A ******* LIFE. all of us i mean dont get me wrong i loved both books but still who gives a **** what everybody else thinks about the books. if we liked them or hated them we dont need to tell everybody. i mean this is just stupid why the hell are people fighting over these books. ryan if you really have a girlfriend go spend some ******* time with her man. instead of fighting with some random person you dont even know.

  202. bookworm_1515 says:

I’m with you man. HA! I’m outta here. I’m off to read Through the Darkness by Harry Turtledove. It’s gotta be better than what I have just read here in this site. C-y’all

  203. hello says:

Hey “get a life man” boy/girl or something in between. Who the **** are you to tell me what to do. I have a life and so do nearly all these people here. And as for you mister “I’m off to read Through the Darkness by Harry Turtledove. It’s gotta be better than what I have just read here in this site.” Your name is bookworm and your telling us to get a life?!?!?!?!?!?
Why don’t you go and think out your priorities first. Get a life man you talk like your high on who knows what “hahaha wow i am such a ******* loser ”
We all know your a ******* loser so why don’t you go with bookworm and have *** in the shower or whatever stoned people do together
    See you all
    Man this is fun

  204. ArYa says:

i LOVED the books and if you dont then there is somthing ******* wrong with you. the story was fantastic. i agree with anyone who loves the book just as much as me. And to the dude that wants some more information then go to wikpedia. they have some great stuff. There are some spoilers just to warn you but it is awsome what you can learn on it. if you dont want me to ruin the book then STOP READING for i am going to give two things out that could ruin the book for peple that dont want it to be ruined. 1) the last dragon is green. 2) Arya is the next rider. now you can not get mad at me for i warned you to stop reading. RIGHT. thats what i thought. now i bet the curiosity was just to great. right. so toodles for now iwill get on later

  205. eragon surpases LOTR in awesomeness and everything says:

ok unlike all you other people who say **** and dont leave any info, i will. im 16, live in canada and dont live to read. what i do read though, tends to be a good book. ive read all the artemis fowl books, all LOTR, all the ahrry potter books, read frankenstein and dracula, not a fan of wheel of time and i truly do enjoy the inheritance series as books that suck you in like drugs. Eragon was out a long time before i actually read it and at first glance, it looked like some attempt by a new writer to get into the big leagues of writing. Finally around last christmas, my mom bought my bro the hardcover set and bought me eragon in paperback. The first night i read it, i was actually sad about going to sleep and wasting so much time not reading this fabulous book.
When i finished eragon, there was only one week left of christmas break and i had to read eldest or i was going to have to wait for my own copy since it was my bro’s. I spent all my time reading it and none of that time was wasted. When i discovered CP was only 19 and had these two amazing books, i instantly thought of mary shelley. she was also only 19 when she published frankenstein, and it has remained a classic even today. Cp is well on his way to becoming an author who might never be forgotten and im going insane waiting for the third book. I finally have eldest in paperback, so i read for an hour before i go to bed and attempt to visualize the excerpt from book 3 in the back of it. The people who make fun of CP as a crappy writer, it really bugs me that you can actually say that when most of you have probably achieved nothing worth while in your life and must have had a horrible child hood to be so cruel. Myself, i have never enjoyed robert jordans books, but i dont say they suck *** or anything, i merely state they arent wonderful in my opinion, and leave it at that.the people that do make fun of this obviously have problems and this is a means for them to express their bottled up anger. As for writing, ive only written a three page short story im my GR.11 english class with LOTR to inspire the grammar and the main object of the story, and my teacher enjoyed my so called “tight knit” language she actually wanted to copy it to show to future classes. My father believed i had actually copied it off the internet, which surprised me that he thought it was that decent. Besides that i just like to say that CP deserves all the credit he gets and twice that amount for making the best book i have ever read.

  206. Just a fan says:

I like like both the Lord of the Rings and the Inheritance trilogy. Well, as far as the first two books. I did notice some simple similarities. But that doesn’t change the fact that they are both great stories. I wouldn’t presume to know what Mr. Tolkein would think. But I would say that he would probably have no problems with someone using ideas from his already published works to form their own stories. I think that Paolini has done a wonderful job and I am looking forward to reading the third book.

  207. Jogg says:

Eragon is a great book and eldest is good 2 but not as good as eragon i think all of the people who said it was rubbish are all idiots because why buy the second book when they say the first book is so rubbish.

There may be connections between eragon and lord of the rings but who really cares this is way better than that lord of the rings

I am really excited for the next to come out and can some one tell me when it comes out and if it is really called Empire

  208. Paolini rocks says:

I loved both books. And I read tons of Fantasy Sci-fi and mystery. I am 16 and love to right. I am currently righting the rough draft of my first book. I loved them and I do know books

I believe that everyone has a right to their own oppinion, but if you thought it was so horrible, Shut up. Leave the discussing to the people who liked the book.

  209. meeeee says:

…..you spelled write as right…..like three times. fail

  210. ryan says:

so that was me who was named meee. i already posted a couple of times and had an arguement with hello. i would like to try again here by not being such a pretentious *******. i want to have a conversation with someone about the books and how paolini did. i still dont like them but i want to understand why someone else does.i enjoy argueing and am trying to be reasonable about it this time…..so yeah

  211. ryan says:

also as an aside to rome. people read lots of books. I myself have read many many books and I am only sixteen. dont think your some sort of prodigy just because you have alot of time on your hands, i dont read as much as i used to because i have less time and im sure alot of the adults here have run into the same problem. there are alot of books in the world, dont assume you are an expert on literature just because you have read alot of fantasy. broaden your horizons. also using books like harry potter and LOTR to illustrate your points is slightly flawed as they arent the only well written fantasy books out there.and insulting people for there sexuality is possibly the most immature thing you can do. i have plenty of *** friends and am more than a little bi myself. so grow up. please

  212. Alex Mckenzie says:

If you children can’t play nice you can’t play together. Everone lay off Fyrth. It was his opinion. You on’t need to insult him. Not everyone likes star wars but I’m getting over it. I love eragon and eldest. They have a god storyline. However Poalini seems to have written these books for himself and anyone who isn’t already a major fan of fantasy like LOTR is going to find it hard to get into it.

I can’t wait to read the third book. No one seemed to answer when a few other people asked when it was coming out. Does anyone know?

  213. Darkeh says:

All right, Eragon sucks. Here is my rant, and im not going to call any one an idiot because they like these books, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

    Names: Vanilor = Valinor
    Eridor = Eriador
    Isenstar = Isengard
    Ardwen = Arwen
Eldor = Elladan, Elrohir, Elrond, Eldar
    Gil’ead = Gil-Galad
    Rona = hardware store.
    Murtagh = Murtag
    Galfni = Gandalf.
    Eoam = Eomer
    Elessari = Elessar
    Morgothar = Morgoth
    Imiladris = Imladris
    Mithrim = Mithril.
    Beirland = Beleriand
    Melian = Melian

Plot:Holy flying cheese! These books could be called Star of the Rings, wow man! Kid living with uncle, uncle dies at hands of some weird beast with an unpronounceable name. Kid gets some magical thing(Saphira, lightsaber you could say and the Ring). Kid vows revenge, gets help from some weird old man(Brom was ok, but too similiar to Star Wars characters and Gandalf). An epic quest takes place with a shady character(Murtagh-Aragorn(who is so much hotter than Murtagh)). Old weird man dies(oh wow…Gandalf and that other dude). Continues on blah blah blah, in this case Star Wars kicks Eragons skinny blonde butt. And someone called this an epic. Absoloutely not, not in any way shape or form is CP’s little trilogy an “epic” is a waste of paper, and he killed hundreds of thousands of trees publishing this “epic”

    Characters:Eragon-Luke
Brom = Gandalf, other wierd charrie from SW.
    Murtagh = Aragorn
    Arya = Arwen
    Saphira = Ring,

One of my main rants is Eragon, in other words Marty-Sam, a character than has many tragic things happen to them, make it sportingly through, and : shows no emotion what so ever, has amazing powers that usually take years to build up, has hundreds of women flocking after them and are usually very thick.

Sure, Tolkien didn’t invent Elves or Dwarves or anything, but he gave them a very unique spin that most fantasy authors use today, many of them change them so their different, CP did not. The Elves live with nature, are wise, fair, solemn, sad because their numbers are dwindling and have an ancient unreasonable feud with the dwarves. Same thing with the dwarves, short, gruff, like to smoke and drink, wield axes, sounds familiar.

CP also has numerous inconsistencies, how could Eragon, a skinny 15 year old, push shut Saphira’s wings in a windstorm, when she herself, a Dragon, cannot? And CP seems to think that horses are machines, able to work night and day and not break down. This is unfortunate, because horses are not machines, the way CP writes horses, they would run them selves into the ground, then keep running. Zar’roc or however you write the name, is 5 feet long. Eragon wears it around his waist, this is not possible, because Eragon is normal sized. oh, one of my fave, Veggie Elves, they do not eat meat, and yet, do not care about killing animals for their skin, or other beings.

I detest his books, i have had the displeasure of reading both, and taken notes on any thing that irked me. CP needs to get himself an imagination and some backbone so he can create names that aren’t so blatantly Tolkien. The movie was a let down, and CP needs to have his brains bashed out. There, i’ve had my say…*is content*

EDIT:I would also like to say that Eragon will not appeal to the legions of readers who have been captivated by the Lord of the Rings trilogy, if being captivated means bashing and burning it then yes.

And anyone who thinks that Eragon is better than Lord of the Rings, you do really need to actually read the books or, get your head checked if you have read them. And really, the only reason he got his book published so early, was because his family decided to self publish it, mose aspiring young writers with talent do not have this option.

I also find that Eragon fans have no sense of what punctuation, grammar or spelling is, its quite interesting to try and read: “Y does evry1 lik saphira shes cool nd evryfing but durza rox shadeslayer how dare u call urself dat noone kils shades eragon was just luky he caught him by surprise. I thought da books were great mayb even beter den da magicians guild nd da northern lites. I lik ritin myself about dragons.”

  214. eragon is better than LOTR says:

ok you need to understand one thing mister i like to rant alot. LOTR is a far harder read then eragon, and im sure people who have read both agree. it took me longer to read LOTR then eragon because Tolkein tried to make the book very complex in the fact that his description of middle earth is very vivid and easily imagined. But because he spends so much time trying to visualize it, he ends up going a bit to far ino my opinion, making it a slwoer read. Eragon, on the other hand, desribes the world in a way you can imagine it, but your not reading two pages in a row about a forest. In this sense eragon is better because so many people can pick it up and not feel like the story is dragging, while LOTR is for more of a person who enjoys desciprtion, rather then enjoyability. OH ya! here’s a book everyone should read! its called Rama2. its not the first, but i suggest starting on this one because the first one desribes the world of rama, while the story really picks up in rama2. theres a total of 4 books in this series, with the first one being rendezvous with rama and the final one being rama revealed. They are truly amazing

  215. fish taco says:

  224. fëanor says:

THANK YOU BILLY BOB WILSON (at least for the first part…)!!

    Back to the conversation before…

I agree with Darkeh that LOTR is better than Inheritance. You do need to keep in mind, however, that Tolkien was an incredibly well-educated man in the area of languages, and also loved languages. Christopher Paolini, on the other hand, is a young man who, while obviously having a lot of talent, still doesn’t have THAT much experience.

I also agree with ‘eragon is better than LOTR’ (although not with that statement) when he/she said that LOTR is a slower read because of all the descriptions, and because of that, a reader can pick up Eragon and get a much faster start than if they would pick up LOTR.

I am a HUGE fan of LOTR, and I’m also a pretty big fan of the Inheritance books, so I am sorta in those two comments. I agree that the names are very close, but, I don’t know, I haven’t heard this, but… if LOTR had a large impact on Paolini, maybe that is his way of showing it. I would be shocked if Tolkien would mind if he used the names the way he did.

I have learned through a study of Tolkien’s major works that LOTR came about in a much different way than that of most authors’ works. It came about because of his love of words, poetry, and languages. Starting about when he was in college, he started composing imaginary languagues as a hobby, or something to take him away from more worthy or appropriate academic pursuits. He realized that ‘you could not have a language without a race of people to speak it’ (Carpenter 72). He then gave that language to the elves that a character in a poem of his earlier making meets.

To make a long explanation short, those lengthy one or two-page descriptions that Tolkien is famous for are because of his love of words, language, and poetry.

Please do not think that I am belittling Paolini’s achievements. Both books are impressive works, especially when you take into account his youth and what comparatively little experience he has!

I am curious to know how involved Paolini was with the script-writing process for the movie. There are just too many things that go WAY too far from the book! The only reason I’m going to see the second one is to see how in the world they try and fix all the mistakes they made!

I saw an earlier comment that said that no one over ten could enjoy this book. My sister and I are both teens, and we like it A LOT. My mom is also looking forward to the third book about as much as we are! Speaking of which, when is the third book coming out?

  225. fish taco says:

you know what is a really good book, green eggs and ham. damit i must have read it at least twice!

  226. Darkeh says:

Thank you Feanor( love the name btw *lol*), and you are right, LotR is a much slwoer read, its for those that want an amazing story, to me, LotR is a bit like a jewel, all shiny etc. But its very hard to get to, Inheritance on the other hand is like dirt, its everywhere, and easy to access. Weird description but if you kind of get what i mean. More people canlike Inheritance because it is not as descriptive, and you dont have to commit to it, LotR is like acting, you need to commit to it and once you’ve read it, you will be forever changed.

  227. fëanor says:

I wondered if anyone would notice my name. I do understand your illustration. It explains it pretty well. I wouldn’t quite call Inheritance dirt, but it’s an excellent illustration for that point. I still want to read the third Inheritance book. Inheritance is probably my second favorite book/trilogy/series, second to the Lord of the Rings.

  228. Haldir says:

Darkeh and Fëanor… I agree with the both of you. You know, I think most of the people here who claim that Paolini is a better writer than Tolkien have only ever picked up a Tolkien book, flipped around, felt that the font was too small to read, and tossed it aside. Trust me, I have been down that road… I feel incredibly stupid now. Thankfully, someone convinced me to read Tolkien and since then, I have never felt that anyone like Rowling and Paolini are anywhere near as imaginative as he is.

And yes, The Inheritance Series is a very badly plagiarized book… most of its content is taken from Tolkien’s works and Star Wars. See, unlike the rest of you, we here who are criticizing Eragon have actually read the two published books thoroughly before.

Don’t you think that the Dwarves and Elves in Eragon are a bit too similar to Tolkien’s Elves and Dwarves? Even their languages sound the same! And is it just me or does “Farthen Dűr” remind you of “Barad-dűr”? Sounds quite similar to me.
Elves’ laughs: “It was a wondrous sound, like flutes and harps trilling with delight at their own music.” And “their clear, pure voices”.

    Okay…?

And I read in the first book… somewhere, it mentioned the Elves coming to the land from a far-off place on silver ships… is that supposed to be creative? Does CP really have nothing better to do than copy peoples’ writings? He has a bunch of gibberish words that SOUND like Tolkien’s languages and he calls them languages! They don’t even have a structure… how can those be languages?

Plus, Darkeh is right… Eragon is a downright Marty-Sam. Even RORAN was always thinking “Oh, I’m not as good as Eragon..” or “Eragon could do this but I can’t!”.. “I’m not as strong as Eragon!”… “Eragon’s skills are all better than mine.” Yeah whatever, Paolini… fan fictions belong on the net, not as published books on people’s shelves.

What happened to creativity? Can Paolini not do something as simple as coming up with his own names? Nearly all of the names and places in his books are names from Tolkien’s Arda altered by one letter… and in the case of “Melian”, he didn’t even bother altering it!

No, you people who think that Paolini is a better author than Tolkien… you really need to try fully reading one of his books first. You cannot criticize a book that you have never read before. And watching the movie does not count.

  229. Darkeh says:

    yay Haldir *does dance*

  230. fish taco says:

so you all say how much lord of the rings is like inheritence, did anyone stop to think about the influences of the writers? imean the world around them, there life experiences and things like that. theres no doubt that tolkien wouldve influenced many writers, but the things that influenced HIM such as the events and characters of the war which happened to be taking place in his life were all major parts of his writing. has anyone read a book called animal farm? if you have you probably noticed that all the characters are based on real people from the russian revolution. i see the lord of the rings in much the same way (except it relates to WWII). so i think it would be interesting to look at the life of christopher paolini and reference some characters to people in his life (even though he was only 17). so yeah, thats my two bobs worth so EVERYBODY IN THE POOL!!!

  231. Haldir says:

The difference is that Tolkien and Orwell did not plagiarize… they took real life events and weaved them into a complex tales. Paolini took things from Tolkien and Star Wars: two different fictional stories. Realize that there is quite a difference between influences and plagiarism. Paolini plagiarized, whereas Tolkien and Orwell did not. Unless he lived in Middle-earth or the Galaxy, his story cannot possibly reflect his life’s events.

  232. Haldir says:

    into complex tales**

  233. Darkeh says:

yes, I’ve read Animal Farm, and anyways, George Orwell isn’t his real name anyways, its a pen name. And like Haldir said, Chrissy copied etc. Tolkien and Orwell both took real life events, that affected them in some way and crafted tales.

Another name similarity, Mithrim already existed in Arda, i was looking at the map in one of the Tolkien books i have and Mithrim is an area or something, so there is another name that was taken directly from the text of Tolkien’s works.

  234. fëanor says:

Where is Mithrim? I don’t remember it from any of the middle-earth books.

  235. fish taco says:

Christopher might have had several similarities to LOTR (the races, the language etc.) But he didn’t plagurise. He has been greatly influenced by them and it is reflected in his writting. His writting is like art. (I heard that) Over the centuries artists have been copying and reevlutionising each others ideas. Go into any art gallery and the painting will be split into sections of different classes. Some use the same layout in their placeing of peple and objects etc. There are principles and rules that guide artists in their design but also allows room to step outside the bow and create whatever they want.

Writing is the same. People have been writingfictionalbook for over a hundred years and in that time each era has had its own siilarities. (Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice) What CP has done is taken in Tolkein’s world and personalised it. He has changed many things but kept their essence the same. By doing this he has acknowledged that Tolkeins writing are as good as everyone thinks but also personalised them. Combining old and new together and taking care to preserve the glory of LOTR.

  236. fëanor says:

Wow, I think you got it, fish taco. I still think he made some things a little too close, but what you said is what I have been thinking for a while. I have a feeling that Paolini respects LOTR quite a lot (not sure of this, but it wouldn’t surprise me). The stories are so completely different that the similarities are allowed to slip by, not unnoticed, but they are allowed. If the stories were more similar, than that would be plagiarism, but they are completely different. I am still looking forward to any announcement of when the third book is coming out!

  237. Ryan says:

feanor, darkeh, you two are awesome. thank you for bing intellegent and using grammar correctly. that’s really all i had to say. farewell!

  238. fish taco says:

Thanks for the posistive feed back feanor.

There is something I have been worndering about for a while. In the book, it says that Elva was dragon marked like Eragon. When a rider is linked with a dragon they can do magic. So does this mean that Elva can do magic?

Brom (I can’t beleive he died) said that the gedwey ignasia is something that happens when you touch a dragon hatchling. Does that mean that when a dragon hatches for its rider, someone else could touch it and become that dragons rider? Also how did the Varden and the elves know that the egg wouldn’t hatch when their children touched it. It took hours (days?) for Sapphira to hatch for Eragon. How did the riders know who it was meant to hatch for.

I hope someone can answer these questions.

  239. Locke says:

Christa your a dumb **** who leaves a comment that has nothing to do with the book (hmmm). I am a child and your a ******* loser. I bet you feel hard making fun of people who aren’t tall enough to reach your saggy tits. I’m printing out your comment right now just so I can wipe my *** with it. Just in case I need to wipe my *** later I’m going to buy one of your novels too.

P.S. Sorry about the ******* cusswords

  240. fëanor says:

You’re not sorry about the cusswords, Locke.

I would doubt that if just anyone would touch a dragon after it hatched that there would be a link forged between them. I have no clue about this, but I bet they would probably have all the children line up somewhere and have the dragon go to the one it chose. That would be one way that makes sense. The dragon would probably not like for other people to touch it, it might try to bite them or something. I really have no clue about this, this is just my opinion.

I wouldn’t be surprised either way about Elva. I have heard some theories that she will be the next rider, but I doubt it. It wouldn’t surprise me if she would be able to use magic, or if she wouldn’t be able to. Either way, that dragon mark is going to greatly influence her, although if I remember properly, we have yet to see how that plays out. Yet again, this is my opinion.

  241. Darkeh says:

And here on our left *points to Locke’s post* we have a very intelligent post on something that has nothing to do with the subject.

Mithrim… is *toddles off to find Silmarillion* an area that was covered by the giant flood that ended the First Age, you’ll have to look at the map in the back of either Children of Hurin or the Silmarillion to find it. There is also a Lake Mithrim.

Elva was one of the few decent characters, she was nasty and rude, and certainly not a mary-sue like Arya. And i also find it strange that Saphira didn’t hatch for Eragon right away, if i was her, i would of rolled out of his bedroom and hatched for Roran, he’s semi-normal.

  242. fish taco says:

Roran. Seminomral. I guess as long as you don’t look at Katrina, say the word Katrina or even think the word Katrina. I think that Sapphira would be a little crazy to choose Roran. Everything he has done since we’ve known him has been done fo Katrine. I think Sapphira would be jealous with in the first thirty seconds.

I know I asked a lot of questions before and you probably know as much as I do I’m going to ask a few more. At the end of Eldest, Murtaugh says the Galbotorix knows his AND thorns true name. Brom said that you have to find your name yourself, no one could tell you, unless you found an elf who would. I’m not sure about tis but i have a couple of theories. Though I’m not sure if this is a clue or just a mistake.CP doesn’t seem to have the complexities in the plots like JKR or Tolkein. The only big shocker was a complete rip off from star wars.

Galbatorix has kidnapped/bribed an elf. This one doesn’t really work because if he did he could just march into Ellesmera.

Galbatorix had a great great great something or other that was elven. This would explain how he is so good at breaking into peoples minds.

Also has anyon else noticed how great the ‘coincidences’ were. In Teirm they only people Eragon really talks to are Jeid Angelena and solembum
( I love Solembum. He ROCKS) and they all turn out to be major characters that KEEP TURNING UP. Is there anyone that ERAGON talks to that doesn’t end up playing a hero. I bet that the guard he spoke to was the one Roran killed and I bet the sailor that Brom spoke to was on one of the ships in the second book.

Any way they are the only ones I can think of. before I go I’d like to ask. Has anyone gone back ad read Eragon AFTER they find out that Murtuagh is his brother and Morzan his father. It is actually really funny.

  243. fëanor says:

Yeah, I have. It’s pretty weird, knowing all that stuff. It definitely changes the feel of the story, like when Brom wouldn’t tell Eragon which Rider’s sword Brom gives Eragon so that it wouldn’t distract him. You notice other things like that throughout the story. I wouldn’t call it funny, but it certainly is weird.

  244. Taisha says:

Eragon and Eldest were both great books, especially written by someone so young. I applaud Paolini for that. My biggest problem with the story line is that it’s been too predictable for me. One example, I believe Murtagh being Eragon’s brother was supposed to be a big climax in the story, yet I seen it coming in book one. There were too many hints here and there that made that a dead give away. Be that as it may, I still really enjoyed reading the books and look forward to the release of the third book. I have my suspicions of how things will unfold and play out but I hope to be surprised at some kind of hidden twist in the story.
I think this young writer has a lot of talent that will only blossom over time. I do want to point out that the story line does remind me a great deal of Anne McCaffrey’s
books about Pern. None the less, this is the reason I was so drawn to the trilogy of Eragon.

  245. Sammi says:

hey i luved your books so much that my dad atarted to read them. he would go into my room to see if i had the books at home. and one day i did bring eldest and he read until 4:00am and finshed the book. he almost forgot about mothersday he and the rest of my family well i can’t wait till the third book comes out thanks for the great reading!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  246. fish taco says:

Funny weird, I mean the same hing. To all those people who keep mentioning how much like tolkeins langiage CP’s is. WE GET THE POINT. But if you take notice, a lot of his words are also english derived

    Farthen=father
Sapphira=sapphire helloe she’s blue. how more obvoius can you get.
    Delois=damp=earth

If you use your imagination, you can sort of tell what the meaning of the words are. Does anyone have any brilliant ideas about my name thing above?

  247. Darkeh says:

I’ve started to read “The Eye of the World” by Robert Jordan, and it struck me how Paolini used that story line as well. In both stories, The main character is living out on a farm with an older relative(Garrow, Tam(i think thats his name))), then, the farm is attacked by something(Ra’zac, Trollocs), the main character then drags the older relative to town on a board or whatever. Its sad, really it is, that Chrissy can’t come up with his own story line…

  248. Ryan says:

i love the wheel of time soooo much darkeh but it splits off from paolinis stolen stuff after a while and becomes one hundred times better

  249. fëanor says:

Yeah, fish taco, I noticed that. Also, if you pay attention, many of the things they say are similar, like in the first book, when Brom calls the bird, he says, ‘Fethrblaka, eka weohnata néiat haina ono. Blaka eom iet lam.’ the translation is, ‘Bird, I will not harm you. Flap to my hand.’ If you notice, the word in the ancient language for bird (fethrblaka), is very similar to the word for dragon, ’skulblaka.’ If you think about it, it makes sense. ‘Blaka’ means flap as you can tell from the translation. Also, look at the first part of the names. Read it like this: ‘Skulblaka’ is ‘Scale-flapper,’ and ‘Fethrblaka’ is ‘Feather-flapper.’ One more thing, for those of you that remember, the adult form of the Ra’zac is called ‘lethrblaka’. I can’t think of how it would tie in, but this would make sense normally: ‘Skin-flapper’. Just a thought.

  250. fëanor says:

Another thing I thought of is Eragon’s title in Farthen Dűr, ‘Argetlam.’ In the translation I mentioned above, ‘lam’ means hand, and ‘arget’ means silver, giving Eragon the title of ‘Silver-hand’, which is a reference to the gedwëy ignasia. I think that, while he still needs experience and practice, Paolini really did his homework on this. It’s no Sindarin or Quenya (elvish languages), but Paolini is not an Oxford professor who has had decades to practice his language-making.

  251. Darkeh says:

Yeah, but if i was going to make a language, i’de finish school, and go to university and take at least some classes in linguistics. Its usually very available for people to go to university, and now that Chrissy is all rich, he could got to university and make something of himself.

And how unimaginative is lethr… holy cow, its like a four year old wrote it. The correct term Chrissy is “leather”… you missed a few letters.

  252. Z says:

Oh, please, like CP doesn’t think that he’s too smart for college.

  253. yeah uhmm says:

to all you who think he copies names, are you kidding me?? hmm let me think, ok i got something as ridiculous as all your claims.

he totally copied the word “broom”, naming a character Brom.
and definitley copied a jewel, saphire- Saphira.
oh and did i mention how he copied Eragons name. let me explain

E R A G O N = hey all lets replace the E with a D! oh my goodness it spells… DRAGON! lets all accuse him of copying things

so you can say that he copies all those names, but honestly, you can sat that for anything.

oh and i’m going to quote something i saw going down the page. another brilliant name comparison.

    Darkeh:
    Rona = hardware store.

oh my goodness, your sleuthing skills are amazing! i dont think anyone could have thought of a stupider comparison. except for brom=broom

well thats my point. and while everyone is entitled to their opinion, please dont bother saying anything if it turns out that ridiculously stupid.

also, if you dont like the book, just dont even bother commenting on it, mmk?

  254. yeah uhmm says:

and also, thanks to feanor for saying everything i would want to say to you all

and to the ‘eragon is better than lotr’ guy, cause he said some stuff i really do agree with.

you dont have to think this is better than lotr. and tolkien would probably take it as a compliment that Paolini used some similar names and types of characters in his story. to you all who insult other writers for, in a sense, tributing to Tolkiens memory, i really dont get it. Tolkien would probably be ashamed of the way you bash other writers.

  255. Y'all suck, kthx says:

I still think it’s painfully obvious that Paolini borrowed a good quantity from other stories. The writing is forgettable and amateur, and makes his young age sadly clear. A lot of the hype surrounding these books is based on the fact that the author was young when he wrote it.
The story itself is so AMAZINGLY forgettable, though. I was so bored by its drudgery that I can hardly recall a single event, character, or anything really. The names are poorly chosen and made me cringe (overuse of apostrophes, anyone?) There is virtually nothing that made me go “Wow, I never looked at it that way before” or “What an interesting plot shift”.
Eragon and Eldest contain everything I hate in a bad fantasy novel and will lie forever in my list of typical, uninteresting fantasy novels..

((Note: If you respond to this with excessive swearing and idiotic comparisons, I will laugh at your stupidity ;D. But if you can be literate and unaggressive, then by all means reply.))

  256. Y'all suck, kthx says:

Oh, my God. Just dug this up from another post:

“Chris paolini is just about the best living and working author alive besides johnathan stroud”

That is such a total… Well, you get the point? It’s OK to like the books if you really must, I suppose, but to claim that Paolini is the second greatest living, working author just proves that you haven’t read much new literature at ALL. Anyone who has read Ms. Rowling’s series in their entirety and whos’ opinion is not affected negatively (or positively) by HYPE, can conclude this.
Pick a book out of a hat that you loved more than Eragon, I’m sure it’ll be easy. Pick any author that has achieved a better positive public reaction, more fame and praise, and who has TRULY, TRULY written excellent books. Paolini may not be the worst author out there, but he certainly isn’t best or even second-best.

  257. youallsuck says:

cp is not my favoritest author or anything..but he’s pretty damn good. Eragon and Eldest were both amazing books and i can’t wait for the third one!! The movie was fantastically suckish and lame..the worst dialouge i’ve ever heard..extremely disappointing. But for all you that don’t like cp..go **** your mom’s because hes the man :]

  258. fish taco says:

can we PLEASE stop insulting everybody. THESE ARE BOOKS they are not worth getting this excited about. Some of you love them, some of you don’t BIG WHOOP. Sop arguing. This website was made to discuss coming story plots and iscss things that we did/DIDN’T like about the book. Everyone who is saying they don’t like it obviously found it interesting enough to pick up and read all two hundred and something pages And remember all the names and things you didn’t like and then sit infront of your computer, willingly look for a websie like this and then state your point of view. all you poeple who are swearing and insulting each other GET OVER IT.

All right. going back to something that the other fish taco said (the other one’s my brother. in case you didn’t work it out fish taco, tuna fritters and billy bob watson are the same people) he said before that Tolkein and Orwell got their plots from things hat actualy happened and it was the same thing as what CP did except he got his thing out of books and movies. Someone (Darketh?) said that it was different because they got theirs out of real life.

Think about it. Isn’t T.V almost as much a part of our lives as what we do ourslves? Poeple spend hours sitting in front of the T.V. And somewhere peple spend hundreds of thousands of millions of dollars fliming those things. Star wars for example. It took something like twelve years to make all six movies. People spent millions of dollars on it. It was written to captivate and inspire thousands. Although there are he occaisional peple who don’t like it, they’ve all seen it. It has managed to entertain people from two different decades which is something that many thing haven’t been able to do. every decade a newthing comes along. But star wars is different. I have a science teacher who has to be at least thirty years old who spends half the class talking about star wars with one of the students (not me). that a two decade gap! Now does it really surprise anyone that CP wa influenced by it? When the fith movie came out, and we all found out that darth vader was luke’s father, every one was shocked. I think that that was what CP was trying to do. It was that sort of reaction he wanted. Unfortunately writers tend to live in their own little world and forget that most pople who read their books are goin to be smart enough to wotk it out beforehand or at least be slightly annoyed by that comparison. However when he wrote it, he probably thought it was a grand master stroke and perhaps it was. We got a breif glimpse of how it affected Eragon. And perhaps he was trying to make a point to someone that it doen’t matter who your perants are it doesn’t necesarily mean that you’ll turn out like that. Or that your perants are the ones who love and care for you, not necersarily the ones who gave you life.

I think I’ve written enough I hope you all get the point.

  259. sheri-ann says:

    hey
how do people know the third book is gonna be called empire?
    xxxx

  260. sheri-ann says:

also i thought the books were good. i prefer the second one its written alot better. so i suspect the third 1 is gonna be even better. does an1 know any books that are like eragon or lotr?
    ***

  261. Firework says:

People, just because someone doesn’t agree with you doesn’t make them *insert a lot of swear words*. And calling those who don’t like the Inheritance Trilogy curse words for not liking CP isn’t helping your case. fish taco is right, these are books, for ENTERTAINMENT. We’re not discussing a war here, we’re discussing a fantasy series. People who argue their points of not liking something at least are explaining their reason logically but those who just insult those people for not agreeing with them give no reason to actually agree with them.
It’s true, Inheritance does borrow from a lot of other sources (but then we go to the “nothing is original anymore” idea), but CP doesn’t try and throw his own original twist to things. He could have spared Oromis from being compared to Yoda if he -say made him a girl or made Oromis a narcoleptic.
I just don’t understand why Inheritance follows Star Wars so closely. There’s nothing wrong with it, but why are all the characters roles so similar?
When Murtagh… shouldn’t say or it might ruin it, but you know- and Eragon was upset but then Murtagh vanished from existence until the very end when he returned. His return would have been much more emotional and interesting if Eragon had missed his friend for the entire book, but he didn’t. People have said that they actually forgot about the most liked character in the book.
And then there’s the technical issues. I read an article of the major flaws during the Battle of the Burning Plains, such as that Hrothgar wears golden armor which is heavy, expensive, and is damaged easily and so is the worst metal to use for armor. And these dwarves should know that.
Inheritance is entertaining. For me, the writing style can’t grasp my small attention span and so lost me even before Eragon went to visit the traders for months. But I really do find Inheritance entertaining, but probably not deserving of all this praise of being so gosh darn wonderful. The books could use some fine tuning to work the kinks out. I just would like some more interesting characters.

  262. emily says:

    the movie was awesome
    eragon is soooooooooooo hot
    i luv him
the books were awesome the second one was better than the first
the third book is coming out august, 07
    see ya

  263. Darkeh says:

yuck, then there will be a huge roar of “approval” because the next book is coming out.

    *has reverted to kindergartenerish ways*

paolini sucks, and saying that he is the second best author is a terrible way to spend your life. Sorry all, we agree to disagree.

There are probably thousands of teenages, that are writing better than him, and not getting published. Its pathetic, really it is. Maybe, if he went through college, and got a decent education, maybe in linguistics, we wouldnt be having this conversation.

  264. fish taco says:

    Hey Fireworks thanks
Your right, there are technical issues in the books but I can explain the one with the golden armour. There is one part of mythology, I think it may be Norse, I don’t know but there is a mythical figure who wears golden armour. It isn’t actually solid gold. It’s normal armour with very thin gold plating. They make the plating really thin because gold is so heavy. It looks really good and it doesn’t weigh it down too much. They used to do that sort o thing in england too.

Also, now that I mention it, do the dwarves whole culture sound a tiny bit like the vikings, dying in battle and such. Also Hrothgars hammer reminds me of the hammer given to Thor by Loki to win a bet. It just reminds me of them.

Anyway, how does emily know when the net book is coming out? Is it really coming out in august?

Before i go I have a question. Why is Darketh on this sight? I’m not saying it’s a problem or that ou shouldn’t be but why are you here. You don’t like the books and you seem to have the impression that everyone on this sight has the intelligence of a three year old.

    Anyway Bye Bye

  265. emily says:

don’t hate the book hate the author

  266. emily says:

i found out when it was coming out from answers.com and searched for book 3
darkeh, christopher paolini is an ugly nerd, but he writes pretty good and tells us when your book is coming out if you think you can write so much better than paolini

  267. Darkeh says:

Oooh, from your spelling, its pretty hard not to think that everyone on here has the intelligence of a three year old. I’m here, to put up a fight, because i think that his books(really its fanfiction) suck, and he as an author(ha), sucks as well. Like I said before, there are thousands of fifteen year olds that are writing better than him.

And when have I ever said that i was “better” that Chrissy anyways? If I have, please quote me and i’ll take this bit back. I never said i was better than him, and i probably am, but i’m biased. I’m a budding author, but i plan on going to University and getting schooling higher than a high school diploma. I have better plans than writing a second rate book, and getting it published through my parents, then getting it re-published because some company wanted to make millions. I intend to make my fiction, truly fiction, not copied off of some other author’s work. I want my work to be as original as possible, and if i do decide to make a language for my creatures, I plan to get a full understanding of my own language(English) before I even try to make my own.

    Its as simple as that.

  268. emily says:

yeah, thanks for helping me understand why you don’t like him or his books
that’s totally true, he’s copying lord of the rings and i think he’s also copying star wars
okay, he’s an idiot but i’m still reading his retarded book, even though i don’t exactly like him copying other authors
    what a *****, oh well
if i could jump him i would, but ican’t

  269. RyerOrdStar says:

The writing here is Mind Candy….it takes you to a completely new world. Why down it……………just enjoy it all for the fascinating writing that it is. And if you think you can write better, I challenge you to…JUST GO DO IT.

  270. emily says:

    why don’t you try ryer
sure it’s a good book, but he stole other authors ideas
so stop being such a butt

  271. jessica says:

    right there with you emily
    ryer is a butt

  272. fish taco says:

thanks for clearing that up Darketh. And just so you know, my spelling is only bad because I can’t type, not because I can’t spell. Also I never said that you thought you were beter then CP. Good on you for going to Uni. Mostof my friends are dropping out in year eleven and getting traineeships even though I keep telling them to stay at school.

Fantasy rocks. It is the most awesome type of book to write. You can do anything with it and as long as you explain it all well, you can get away with anything. A lot of people seem to be saying this but I too am writing a book. In fact i just finished it. I love putting normal everyday teenagers into situations where they have to deal with magic.

That’s something that I didn’t like about eragon. He is a normal farmboy yet when he suddenly does magic, it takes about two paragraphs for him to go from WHAT, MAGIC. ME to ‘hey look at me I can make a rock fly.’ I know he lives in a world that is full of legends of magic and dragons and elves and dwarves, but shouldn’t he be a bit more surprised that he is part of that. If I had a rock that hatched into a dragon, I don’t think I’d be as rational as he was, no matter how many stories I’d heard.

It is so much more fun to take highly emotional people and then place them in a situation where they go into hysterics. I love playing with peoples minds like that. You get to explore the human psyche without being arrested for torture.

    HeHe its my birthday tomorrow
    Goodbye all

  273. Kitty says:

I looooooooooooove Eragon and Eldest! Who doesn’t? I am so crazy about it memorized the actors/actresses who played the characters in the movie. I even made up my own “Eragon game” with my friends! I thought that Cristopher made Eragon perfect and should change none of it. Zero. I thought that Eldest could have used a little more “what up action” in it. A lot of the time it was just sit at Elesmera and go to training and then sleep and wake up and go to training and talk to Orik and sleep and what ever. I still loved the books though! They are my fav. of all time! (And trust me I’ve read a lot of books)
As for the language I loved it. Trying to make up words that make sense yet are strange is very hard! Excpecially when you have to make up as many as Christopher did. That gotta be talent!
The movie I thought was way messed up! They left out Katrina which messes up the whole second book which will suck if they decide to make a second movie. Also, the whole thing about durza’s “Flying mount” was so “not in the book” and how Saphira almost dies? Where does that come from? In the book its Eragon who gets wounded with a big scar. Without that scar it will also mess up the second movie. Another piont. When Eragon goes to rescue Arya from Gil’ead, He flies on Saphira to get thier. Yet some how, Brom (On horseback) and Murtagh (On foot) Manage to get their around the same time. How? Ask the guy who made the movie. There are so many other “woops” in the movie but I don’t want to type all day. I AM NOT blaming this on Christopher though, he didn’t make the movie, he made the book, which, as I said, I thought were perfect. I understand the book would make the movie long if we made them the same, but we could have done a little better.
I am excited for the next book as much as you guys, and I will buy it when it comes out! Cristopher should continue writing fantisy novals after this. If he does I WILL read them. His other books have proven to me that he IS a good writer!

  274. jessica says:

oh well, kitty, but don’t you think the actor who plays Eragon is hot, i think thats the only reason i saw the movie.

happy b-day fish taco, tell us when your book comes out and i think darkeh was talking about me when he asked ‘when did i ever say i write better than him’ i said ‘if you think you can write so much better than cp’

  275. emily says:

the guy who played eragon was hot!

  276. emily says:

that was me who was arguing with Darkeh, you must have been arguing with someone else Jessica

Are you an unattractive nerd Darkeh? just wondering, no offense, you just knd of sound like one

  277. jessica says:

    emily, rude whoa
do you guys really loathe eachother or something?

  278. Darkeh says:

Actually, i am not as you put it so nicely an “unnatractive nerd”. I’m smart, but not nerdy, and people say im pretty, plus, i’m female. And why should it matter what someone looks like on the outside? Really, if you havent heard “its what on the inside that counts” then you need to get out more or something.

And i’m wondering if Kitty even read the other posts…. her(i’m assuming here) post seems very unobservant…. *head tilt*

  279. emily says:

oh i thought you were a guy

  280. joi says:

I am not a fan of Paolini, and in my opinion, the only reason he’s been published are:
    A) parents own a publishing company
    B) Somebody thought that, despite the bad writing and obviously copied plots, they could get people to buy the books. Unfortunately, they were correct.

My biggest problem with the books: Why does Eragon black out every time something exciting is happening? That is even worse than the lame writing. It’s just stupid.
Sorry about offending anyone… I just dislike the books. And you’ve got to agree with me, if Eragon wasn’t always fainting, they would be a lot more exciting. And no, it’s not realistic that he faints in battle, so don’t try that excuse. Or, at least, it’s not realistic that he faints and survives in battle.

Oh… and I really hate Eragon’s cousin. What’s a upstart kid doing leading an entire village into battle!? Seriously. That’s just lame.

  281. Darkeh says:

Personally i like Roran better than Eragon, he tries his best and isn’t a mary-sue… well, a little bit. But not as much as Eragon is. He’s likeable, and its nice to see a decent character churned out of Cp’s butter head.

  282. Eragonisawsome says:

Eragon and eldest was better than Harry potter, Lord of the rings, and the hobbit all put together. I read all kinds of books, more than anyone I know. I am also an author and isn’t nearly as good as paolini.

The only one who even comes close to Paolini is Terry Brooks.

If you don’t think he is any good then just look at how many people bought his books. Most people like eragon enough to buy eldest. There is just a loud minority that didn’t like them and should shut the hell up.

  283. jessica says:

the third book is coming out in august

  284. jessica says:

    eragonisawesome,
u probably think eldest was better than all those other books because it’s a lot like those good books, in case you didn’t know CP copied the other authors ideas, such as Lord Of The Rings Rohan, CP changed one letter and made eragon’s cousins name Roran
I still enjoy Eldest but, i don’t really like the author

  285. Darkeh says:

Wow, the intelligence of some Eragon lovers is astounding. Honestly, if someone doesn’t agree with you, saying they should “shut the hell up” is really not a good idea. Find something better to do with your time than telling a bunch of very opinionated people to shut up, try emptying out a lake with a sieve, or counting grains of sand on a beach.

Loads of people bought his book, i fell into that consumer trap twice. But lots of them hated it, lots of people buy books, then hate them for the rest of their life. The number of books bought has nothing to go with wether or not the consumer liked it.

  286. Z says:

” I am also an author and isn’t nearly as good as paolini. ”

    Evidently

  287. Kitty says:

    Jessica,
Ya I think Eragon is hot in the movie.

Darkeh, yes I did read the other posts. I was just stating my opinion like everyone else. *head tilt*

  288. Darkeh says:

ok, just wondering if you were affected by the others posts.

  289. fish taco says:

Hey I’m soory i don’t actually have anything important to say, i just think it is incredibly funny that you would try to tell someone to shut up when their writing, not talking. I know that sounds stupid but anyway.

Also, although its very entertaining can Darketh and jessica please stop fighting. Also why does everyone I meat (girls that is) keep saying that the guy who played eragon is hot. If you have to say things like that, at least get it right. Murtaugh was so much better.

  290. Amitoz says:

Sorry if i hit a raw nerve with those jokes, Ryan. Its just that i happen to be an anti *** person. Big time. Have any of you heard of the new hp book- ‘the deathly hallows’ sounds exciting. i got my copy reserved for 20.99 at books a million.

  291. Amitoz says:

by the way, that name is one of the characters in a story im working on. :P

  292. Amitoz says:

    its me hello

  293. fish taco says:

O.K I’ve gone back and started reading eldest again and I was reading the part where it talks about the elves religion. CP definately did not copy this bit from LOTR because in that, the elves believed in a god.

Maybe this is just me being corny but i really liked that idea. That there is no god and we are responsoble for our own action and that we are nice and kind and thoughtful etc to each other because we want to be, not because we want to go to heaven or anything else like that. I know that he propbably stole that idea from somewhere else but I still like it.

I only just noticed this. I think it was because there were two by the same person I don’t know but seriously, your not going to jump someone because you don’t like thier book. It’s niot that big a deal. Anyway
    tootleoo

  294. TeeJay says:

Hey, i just want to know when Empire is comeing out because i’m a big fan of Eldest!

  295. Darkeh says:

The Elves in LotR believe in Gods, the Valar, not just one god, just so you know. And all Paolini did was reverse the places of the Elves and the Dwarves, it LotR, the Dwarves beleive in nothing, and the Elves do, what did mister genius do? He switched it. Intelligent.

And i dont think we were fighting… just stating our opinions rather forcefully, lol.

  296. Darkeh says:

    (*)in

  297. fish taco says:

what was that last comment, I don’t think it said much. Also, once agian I just noticed that nowhere on this sight have I read any predictions for the last book. All I’ve seen is people say they do/do not like the books and why and some rather childish insulting.

So does anyone have any ideas of what is going to happen? Who the next rider is going to be, if the last egg will hatch, if sapphira will find a mate, if murtagh will break galbatorix’s hold over him, who the green dragon is going to belong to?

Personally I think the green dragon will belong to either Roran or Arya. Roran because it would be Brother Brother cousin. I don’t know why I think that but I do. Arya because her magic is green. Again I don’t know why I think that I just do. I don’t think it could be a new character because CP takes to long to build up hs characters. He would not be able to end it satisfyingly if we only know a little bit about one of the characters.

Speaking of which, do we know anything about galbatorix? THe way his story is written you can almost feel sory for him. I know that he killed a lot of people and he did some really bad things, like the way he defeated the leader of the riders, but I can’t bring myself to hate him. It must have been absolutely terrible to lose half of yourself.

Also I want to know more about the wizards duel. I don’t get it. If, when galbatorix was killing of all the riders, they saw their friends dying, surely one of them would have realised they couldn’t beat him. Why did they just wait for him to break into their minds and then kill them. They could have just tried to kill in the first place. according to what CP says, they would have died but they would have anyway and this way they could take G with them and saved a lot of other people dying.

Alos Darketh, the elves did not beleive in gods called the valar. The valar is another name for the high elves or the grey elves, I forget which one. Also i know that this is totally unrelated but On a sight I saw it said that galadriel gave frodo the light of india. She gave him the light of eradiel (I don’t think I spelt that right) not india. I’m sorry, I know its not related but they didn’t have a place where I could correct them on that sight and it really annoys me when people get simple things like that wrong. They didn’t even have to read the books, all they had to do was turn the subtitles on in the movie.

Anyway i’ve said all I wanted to so
    Adieu

  298. fish taco says:

    sorry it erendiel

  299. tim says:

i liked ur books both of them very much but i am sorry to say when i saw the movie i got about 10 minutes into it stopped took the disk out and broke it into little tiny pieces cause it sucked that bad. oh yeah then i lit the little pieces on fire

  300. Darkeh says:

But don’t the riders feel a very stong mental and hpysical attraction to other riders, like, if one dragon mates with another, wouldnt the two riders have something similar going on between them? It would be weird if the green dragon(if it is indeed gree) had a male counterpart, and in order for the Dragons to survive, had to mate with Saphira, wouldn’s the two riders feel the same attraction? I don’t remember exactly(not having touched the books in a long time”.

“‘Valar’ is the name given to the fourteen powerful spirits who took physical form and entered Arda after its creation to give order to the world and combat the evils of Melkor. They dwelt originally on the Isle of Almaren, but after its destruction long ages before the Awakening of the Elves they removed to Aman and there founded the realm of Valinor.”
    Lords of the Valar:
    Manwë Súlimo
    Ulmo
    Aulë
    Oromë
    Mandos (Námo)
    Lórien (Irmo)
    Tulkas Astaldo

    Queens of the Valar(Valier):
    Varda Elentári
    Yavanna Kementári
    Nienna
    Estë the Gentle
    Vairë the Weaver
    Vána the Ever-young
    Nessa

Quoted from the Encylopedia of Arda, sorry, the Valar are the Gods as you would say. And your close, is the Light of Earendil(but with a couple dahses over some of the letters)

  301. hello says:

the eragon website is so useless. Under news, there is a little thing that says “Eragon movie premier sweepstakes winners announced” posted about a week before the movie. And hey darkeh, your a pretty hardcore reader. and the idea that book 3 is titled ‘empire’ is just a rumor. Just because it starts with ‘e’ and has six letters doesn’t make it the title.

  302. fish taco says:

Eldar, valar, same dif. I haven’t read the appendix’s at the end of the lord of the rings for a very long time, not scince i was in grde six i think and words get scrambled in my memory. The ar bit reimided me of it and got a little confused. Any the Valar are the guardins of the world. i always thought that meant they looked after it, not that they created it, which is what god do, they create the world. If it says something about that some where else I’m sorry but I’ve only been ableto get a hold of the lord of the rings and the hobbit. I have never been able to find any copies of anything else written by Tolkein that wasn’t notes on the writing of it and not the actual story.

Any way, if the last rider was a guy and the last dragon was sapphiras mate, I don’t think it would turn into a *** parade. just bcause Eragon or Sapphira likes someone, doesn’t mean that the other does. Trianna or whatever her name is is the perfect example. Eragon liked her, Sapphira made her think she wanted to eat her. Also while sapphira was playing silly games with glaedr eragon wasn’t doing the same with oromis (Wrong, really wrong) so I don’t think it works like that.

Also question for darketh. You don’t like the books or the storyline or the writer. We knowyou sort of like roran, are there any characters you do like. You have to at least like angela or solembum.

    calma,hwesta,alda,ure, umbar,thule
    formen,hyarmen, romen, numen

  303. Darkeh says:

Angela was so amazing! Another semi-decent character, plus, she insulted Eragon, so she rocked even more!

I never confirmed that Empire was the title, i could really hardly care anways.

  304. Z says:

The title could just as easily be “Ending”

Starts with E. 6 letters. Makes sense.

  305. fish taco says:

Yeah, makes sense. Also incredibly boring. You could probably come up with at least three alternate names for the book that would also mke sense. I just hope CP has enough integrity to try to come up with something original. If the name of the book is empire, it would be very disapointing, although it might not be his fault. someone probably found out what he was planningand told the whole world. But if were him I would change the title to something noones expecting.

darketh, you’re right angela does rock. She is the most awesome human character in the book.

    calma

  306. fish taco says:

OK once again i have gone back and read a few more of the other posts ther are a lot of them so I originally only read the first and last twenty or so.
First off, everyone that likes the books keeps saying he did a really good job considering he was only fifteen. His age should not effest the quality of the book. If anyone here has read the prophesy of the gems. It is a very good book very imaginative and very well written and it was written by a twelve year old. You should not have to take into accout the authors age when reading a book. I know it will make a difference to the story whats prioritised and so forth, but e should not have to pick up a book and say. ‘well I haave to read it even though its badly written, that’s alright, the author was only fifteen.’

Also, I thought someone would have complained about this before now, but did anyone else notice that in the movie, Arya is NOT an elf. Did we also notice she is BLONDE. How the hell are they supposed to be able to make the next movie without arya being an elf. So far, Eragon has not met an elf. Elves are not even mentioned except to say that they went into hiding. HELLO. How is that supposed work. Also, and this is my biggest issue. I don’t remember ever hearing Solembums riddle in the movie. I saw it a while a go so I might be wrong, but I don’t remember even seeing Solembum. Also what was the cooky stuff withthe magic. And they made sapphira like a dog. You’re right I’m wrong, If you die I die so I should die to stop ou dying because your oh so important without me.

Without Sapphira, Eragon would still be digging rocks. He might even be dead. And they made her lke a tame little thing that must bow down before the awesome power of the sixteen year old boy! Never mind that Dagons have a noble and prowd history, that they are wise and powerful creatures. Especialy compared to humans. They̵
