Aren't we confused about our sexuality? Walking through quagmire of social norms, disease, personal notions of hygiene: a person can be confused. It is not everyone's game that as soon as you are attracted to someone you jump into the bed with him or her. Sometimes just imagining the object of your affection, having sex with him in your mind is enough. In my opinion what Lawrence means is that Birkin loved Gerald not only for his physical form - which they rather proved wrestling and lolling about in naked, if that isn't lovemaking, then, pray, what is it? - but spiritually. I know exactly how he felt, you don't have to lie with a man to love him in a non-platonic way.
